Last week I ordered the shocks listed in a July article about shocks
available from the surplus center in Lincoln Nebraska. They did not arrive
so I called them back. It seems as if the shocks they are selling have some
sort of a hairline crack and are being sent out to a machine shop to be
repaired. I will let you know when they arrive and of they will work

Back about 15 years ago I was informed that the Porsch Carrera shock could be modified to fir Amphicar. In the case of my 1962 model I was able to use the English Armstrong S62 by cutting 1" off the shaft. This was 10 years ago. I don't know how the prices would now compare with Gordon's.

Well it finally happened. My daughter and I headed out for an errand
and a swim and the Amphi let me down. The left rear shock rod broke.
This caused the suspension to collapse and altho driveable, there was
a rubbing noise in the left rear. Knowing how expensive Amphi parts
are I called a tow truck.
Upon arrival at home I removed the broken shock and found two things,
1) it had been bent for a long time as the hole that the rod passes
thru was worn to an egg shape and 2) the rubbing noise was the clamp
on the axel boot digging into the tunnel. Another mile or so and it
would have punched thru.
Question, What about shocks? Is Gordons the only source? Has anybody
tried to weld spring mounts onto existing standard type shocks?
Because I own a Texaco station I have a very good relationship with
my NAPA parts store. I am going to try and get their help in finding
a shock that fits and then I will see about mounting the spring.
Bill Capron, Sunny and 75 and no Amphi to drive.

Bill,
I have tried to find a suitable replacement for the shocks but have
had no luck falling short of finding a replacement to weld the
mounting eyelets on. The top is threaded on the bottom is welded.
Good luck. The only suitable replacement would be thru Hugh but they
are pricey.

I have a copy of the write-up Rick Fry has done on Amphi Shocks. Can't
seem to find it on the Yahoo Archives though. W Capron (or anyone else)
- if you want me to e-mail you a copy send me an e-mail at:
awoodc@earthlink.net. It's a great article with step by step
instructions on making shocks from off the shelf parts.

and got exact

Gord,

Snowmobile shocks? Unless those snowmobiles are about 2600lbs
(60/40 weight), I would think they will be in-adequate for the
Amphi.

Any word on getting our original shocks rebuilt?
The shocks on my 67 Amphi are pretty shot, so I either need replacements, or
rebuilt ones.
What's the best way to go?

Ken,

A sample was sent off to the guy who said it may be do-able. I have no
idea what his schedule is like so I don't know if he needs a week or a
month. Once I get an answer I'll let all know what happened. I'm tired
of driving with shot shocks and not willing to spend a grand to
replace them.

I just ordered some monroe 58253 front shocks for my 67 Amphi, but havent
received them yet.
I'll keep you posted on whether the work or not.
I found some monroe 58620 shock for the rear, & got excited for a moment.
They would have fit, except they were 17" long instead of 16".
I was looking at my old one & it looks like the top bushing/sleeve might
unscrew from the shock rod.
If this is true, mayby one could cut an inch of the monroe, thead the rod, &
screw the old part back on. Does anyone know if it unscrews??

Till later.....

With all this talk lately about shocks and what might or might not
fit, function properly, etc., here is a novel concept:
If you need shocks, buy them from Gordon Imports. Hugh has done a
lot of research and has a product that meets or exceeds the
specifications of the OEM units. The shocks he sells are very high
quality, adjustable in both height and dampening, fit the car without
any modifications, and they last. And just for the record, they look
really cool!
I have over 4,000 miles on my car since installing Gordon's shocks.
Frankly, after using these, I wouldn't run anything else. Especially
something I had to modify first to make fit!
Sooo.... we can do all our own research, testing, etc., and come
up with someting that might (or might not) be up to the task, or we
can call the Gordons and get parts designed and engineered for the
job. It doesn't seem that difficult a decision to me.

Hugh does not have the shocks that fit the early style cars without
mods that need to be done, only late, thru hull type are available
w/o mods.

I beg to differ, John. I have an early car and Hugh's shocks bolted
in right out of the box. No modifications necessary.
