Shocks

I've heard 2 diffferent reports on the Ardan's shocks.
Some people say they work great, while other people I know that have them
say they clunk & make noise. I'm not sure who to believe, so I was checking
different options. In Minnesota, we like to have options. I'll keep you
posted on anything I find , if any, as I discover them.
Till later.....

Ken,

I have original shocks in one of my cars and Alden shocks in the
other. When I first installed the Alden shocks and adjusted them per
the instructions, the front shocks would "top" quite often. I also
noticed that the front of the car was a bit high. I reset the height
adjustments to as low as they would go, the front end lowered to the
correct height and the "topping" stopped. I've been happy with them
since then (over 3 years). Hugh might have changed this setting
instructions in his later instruction printings because I know I
talked to him about it back then.

John,
Regarding your description, you should know that there are TWO
shocks offered for the rear:
Part # 4-20-37a requires the use of the original rear spring on the
early cars, as quoted by you from Hugh's site.
Part # 4-20-37a/s comes complete with a powder-coated spring that
fits the early cars and bolts in WITH NO MODIFICATIONS.
I run the -37a/s type and love it. The other one, the -37a shock is
the same thing but still offered without the spring. The intention
is for this to be an economy model. It allows the old spring to be
reused, if that is what the owner prefers.
Frankly, I didn't trust my old springs and wouldn't risk their use.
Since Hugh offered a complete shock, I didn't have to. After living
with these, I can honestly say I wouldn't run anything else.

Hello,

My springs were in good shape and I reused them on the new shocks. No
problem.

There are other optons for Shocks on Amphicar.
I have on all my (4) cars, and many more out there . Kimpex Snowmobile gas charged shocks.
They use these (1)under the seat in the tracks to hold the aproxamate 500 plus sled.and driver. Amphi uses 4...do the math..
they work great give a bit stiffer ride than a oil filled shock but no bumping or topping out like others that I and others have tried and taken back off.
the rears have to be modified to fit amphis metic bolt(04-268) but early fronts fit right in with a bushing I get from spring shops. its part number was 04-266
and cost about $80.00each with an ajustable spring holder. they have springs to at about $30.00
