Arnold,
I had the exact same problem with my 64, even with new radials. Yes,
was downright terrifying at speeds above 40 mph. Turned out to be a
alignment problem with the culprit being the toe-in. If this is your
problem, you can probably see it by setting your wheels straight,
then
veiwing from the front of the car. Draw a line with your eye through
the bottom of the front tires, in relation to the rear tires. Made
all
the difference in the world, once I aligned mine. Specs are in the
Amphi book!

One more thought, do you guys there have a product called Trakrite ? It's a
drive over wheel alignment device. Details are on the website
http://www.gunson.co.uk (follow link to products) it's a great bit of kit,
very easy to get the alignment right and also shows if there is a problem
with the rear wheels (useful on Amphi) you just drive over and see if a
pointer moves left or right which indicates if the tyres are scuffing.

It's quick and accurate and has saved me a fortune over the years but is a
bit expensive to solve a one-off problem (about $90) but if you have a lot
of cars...

Arnold,
I had the same problem also with my white 67, the problem was indeed
the toe-in. From front view of the car, you could see without even
measuring that the right front wheel was off about an inch and a
half. This caused considerable wear on the edge of the tire. Problem
now solved, and no more wandering all over the road.

Thanks for all of the advice on the possible problems with my wanderer.
I've made a list of all of your ideas and plan to go through them one at a
time until hopefully the car can hold a razor sharp line going 70 mph down
the road. Personally, after all of your suggestions, I'm betting on an
alignment problem. While I don't see anything unusual looking at the tires
pointed straight ahead, one of the tires rubs in the wheel well with the
steering wheel turned to its maximum. I guessing sometime in the past there
was a problem here that never got fully corrected. Today I'm pulling off
the protective plate under the front end and making sure all of the locking
nuts and adjustments to the tracking rods are working properly. No sense
in paying someone else to do all of that. Then I plan to drive the car (at
less than 40mph) to a front end alignment shop. I'll keep you posted.
