Is transmission venting necessary

The previous owner used rubber plugs in the transmission fill holes. I have
since replaced them with the original caps. I do notice trans fluid being pushed
out after a while. I'm guessing the inner seal is already blown. Can I do any
additional damage (beyond the seal) if I put the plugs back in? Does it need to
breathe? It would be nice to keep the fluid IN the transmission.

Are your double lip oil seals on the axles letting water into the tranny
forcing the oil out the top filler/vents?

I installed new double-lipped seals a few months ago. It usually happens when
I'm going down the road. Similar to what's been posted here recently...fluid
moving from the water tranny to (and out of) the land tranny.

Randy,

Your tranny hasn't budged in 7 years, so a little stiffness of the seals and
whatnot is to be expected. Unless the levels really plunge towards empty at
either the land or water tranny side (the Club's 2002 Members' gift tranny
level dipstick will be a big help here, fitting right handily in the glove
compartment ), consider this season a breaking-in period.

Drain all your fluids at the end of the season, including both trannies the
"hard" way (see http://www.amphicar.com/restoration.htm#trannies ) to best
flush out the cobwebby cruds, and all will probably be well next year, with
your gear oils likely to be a lot less migratory.

I'm really glad you're finally afloat. It's nice to have another Amphi
that's a local call.

Thanks Bill. I'll keep an eye on the fluid levels and do the recommended
changes. Took it out again Monday evening to Seneca...and again, another
blast. A couple of observations:

People seem to routinely travel with cameras in their pockets. Everyone
who saw us seemed to have one.
The Amphi is a road hazard. Other drivers will watch an Amphi forever.
As a road car, the Amphi is only car I've driven that also has pitch and
yaw.
May try putting in at the 'Mouth of Monocacy' near Dickerson this
weekend. Just a few miles farther.
