Headlight rubber sealing ring

In browsing some of the old posts on the amphi lovers forum it appears that
replacement headlight rings from Hugh are no longer designed for use with
the sealing rubber ring.

Does this create a long term problem for the highlight buckets? I have a
couple of sets of original headlight rings that I can re-chrome if need be.
I would imagine sealing this area would be problematic at best.

So is it worth the effort to re-chrome the old rings and buy the $50 (each)
sealing rings from Hugh? Or just buy the repro units that don't seal?

Thanks!

Water gets in past the headlight seals - and remains there for some
time. Without the seal it's water in, water out. I have original
rings - rechromed - and using seals. I also refinished the buckets
using POR-15 so there's no rust at least on the buckets. I've been
meaning to use the silver POR-15 on the backside of the rings to help
preserve them. Thanks for the reminder.

I haven't seen the new rings but understand they look like the
originals without the drain.

Headlight rubber sealing ring

I don't think our buckets are in to bad of condition. Hopefully a light
sand blasting will clean them up nicely.

It almost sounds like not using the seals would be the smarter way to go, at
least you would know there is no water in there.

So much to learn!

The originals had a drain valve system in the bottom, within no time these seem to bug up, then water got in and could
not get out.In all my cars I leave this lower valve out. Unless you want a 100 point show car(A Amphicar???why??) then leave the seal off to.
water does not seem to hurt the headlight and I have had them on in water too(just for fun) so with seal off and valve off as soon as you come out of water it drains 100%
I always put these parts together using a undercoating product to protect as well as good paint!

Re: Headlight rubber sealing ring

I like the idea of water in water out as described by you and Ken. More
than likely I'll rechrome one of my original sets and forget the seals.

We're definitely not going for a concours car so nothing to worry about
there!

Thanks,

Brad
