Boat Registration

Doug,
I had the same problem here in South Carolina. I wanted to
register my Amphi as a car and a boat so that I could get the cool
boater registration decal and registration number displayed across my
Amphi's bow. I had a nice conversation with several officials at the
DNR office. Finally, after a phone call to the state capital, it was
decided that only auto registration would be needed. Over the years I
have been approached by DNR officials a few times. Not a one has ever
asked me about a boat registration. Too bad. I still think it would
look good.

Well, California has it all figured out. The CA DMV also handles licenses for
boats, and they have a specific category of registration for amphibious
vehicles. You get a title that describes the vehicle as an amphibian, then you
buy a 1-year registration for auto license plates and a 2-year registration for
the boat hull. You receive a pair of (aluminum) auto license plates, a hull
registration number (but you need to get your own big letters for the bow), and
a pair of decals showing the marine expiration date.

Works smoothly, once you get the DMV clerk to look up the correct code citing.

Apart from the boat registration gimcracks on the bow looking cool and all,
there may be another factor to consider: travel to other states.

Most states have reciprocal arrangements in that they recognize the
registrations of water craft from other states, but exactly how this may
play out in a case where a state does not require ANY boat registration for
an Amphicar is the question, and may present owners of such Amphis with
legal problems, or at very least annoyance by over-officious Ranger Bob
types having trouble digesting their Krisp Kremes.

For example, in the case of Ohio, home to the largest annual gathering of
Amphicars, one reads at http://www.boatsafe.com/Ohio/index.htm that "vessels
meeting another state's registration system requirements which are used in
Ohio for less than 60 days" are exempt from Ohio registration. So, if
you're from one of those states whose bureacracy can't deal with the concept
of "duality of purpose," you might want to consider getting some kind of an
official statement on letterhead from the appropraite authorities to the
effect that your Amphicar is in compliance with all of the state's boat
registration requirements. Then, just toss this letter into the glove
compartment along with your "Official Water Horsepower Statement" (see
http://www.amphicar.com/WaterHorsepowerStatement.htm ) to fend off Ranger
Bob if he should come sniffing around.
