Hello everyone!
I'm in the process of restoring a '64 Canadian Amphicar.
(www.tbirdsquare.com and click on the Amphi logo)
I'm at a point now very close to priming the car. I have one last bit
of welding to do before I paint and it's the battery box. I'm having
trouble finding any good information on what the original battery box
and hold down system looks like so I can make one and was wondering if
anyone on the list has a picture or two of theirs to share.
I have the shop and parts manuals but it's pretty hard to tell from
that how it should actually all fit together.
Besides, my car and the manuals appear to be different, and I don't
know if someone improvised on my car in the past, or because it was
Canadian it's different than than the USA cars.(aside from Canadian
cars not having Bilge Blowers)
I purchased the top battery hold down part and the side rails from
Gordons, but they sure don't look anything like what I believe to be
original on my car, and I can't figure out how the new parts hold
anything down either, there must be a lot more to it.
Here's a picture of the rusted remnants of the welded in hold down
tabs in my car, they're inside the circles, they stick up about an
inch, but the rest is gone away.

The early top frames were grey while the later ones were black. Yours

There is a complete set of photos of your original battery box in the
files section of this web site. They are called "Original Amphi
battery box". How clever of me to call them that.

I looked through all the files and photos and don't have a clue how I
missed that. It all makes sense now that I see it complete. One more
question...
What is the box itself made of? I thought it would just be a sheet
metal box but it looks nearly 1/4" thick.

Tom,
The box is actually only made of sheet steel but it has a fold at the
top edge to give it that 1/4 inch thick look. The box is a bit
strange since there is really nothing, except the top clamp, to hold
the battery in place and the box doesn't do much except, perhaps, act
as a heat shield. The battery doesn't shift around too much but I
put a few pieces of somewhat sticky plastic stuff on the bottom of
the box to help keep the battery from moving around. Of course, I
also try to keep the top clamp as tight as possible. On balance, it
works okay and looks fine. The battery box and tray area are all
original in my car (a tribute to the previous owner coating the whole
area with 1/4 inch of tar) and I coated those areas with POR 15
before top coating them with either Corlar 25P (the off white epoxy
coating) or chassis black paint. Ultimately, I had the box and the
top clamp powder coated in a semi flat black. It looks really good
and I don't think even battery acid can get through to the metal.

Whatever "original" construction you end up designing, while originality is
swell and all, there's a REASON that it's relatively difficult to find
Amphis with original bracket setups or even original battery base area metal
in most restored Amphis: because they corrode with an open battery there.
So, I think you might be well advised to factor some kind of protective
plastic marine battery box into your final setup.
My Amphi OLD BUOY is essentially just a "patch job" and not really a
"Restoration" with a capital "R", but the one area that really needed a lot
of work was that battery area. Of course, the previous owner had left the
battery in it for 14 years before I got a hold of it, and the battery'd
probably frozen and cracked, so the acid had really had a chance to do its
job on the whole area and even most of the quarterpanel below it. Even with
batteries that don't crack catastrophically like mine, corrosion thereabouts
because of unenclosed batteries is still a pretty common issue. Apart from
the unchecked off-gassing of corrosive vapors from an unenclosed battery,
the fact that the area is basically open to the elements through those
engine lid louvers just above means that water is basically rinsing off bits
of that sulfuric acid residue from the battery so that it can dribble around
and collect here and there to quietly go about its corrosive work. This
really takes its toll over time. No-frills plastic marine battery boxes can
be had for under ten bucks at any marine goods shop, or bought online at
places line www.boatersworld.com or http://www.westmarine.com . If you can
squeeze one of these into your setup, it might be a good move.

Thanks a lot to everyone and their help. I now have enough battery box
pictures to write a book, which I may do.
I'm going to make the getup on thursday or friday so I'll let you all
know how it turns out. Maybe I can get rich manufacturing battery boxes
and writing the book.
It makes a lot of sense to make some kind of plastic liner with a lid
too. I'll try to adapt something to the original configuration. It
seems that there is enough room inside the box that something like that
will work.

It turned out real nice. I still have to cut the notches in the ends of

slightly wider stance for bigger batteries? The Optima batteries I
try to get don't quite fit (unless you squint). They will not
explode, leak and can be mounted in any direction. Not to mention
they will keep your bilge going for a long time in the event of
engine failure. Just a thought, I know how time can be in short
supply.

before I went on the lovers.A Amphi friend Emailed me off line wanting my
Last Battery box(NOS) that I will sell. I will take the other one(I am
keeping ) and have it exactly reproduced
by a metal worker I know(my son married his daughter)
