I too was considering going with disc brakes after seeing Sam's setup last year as I felt a need for better stopping power but decided to go back with original after Sam saying he could do another set for around $4000 if one set ordered--- $2000 if 20 sets ordered.

I guess I spent under $400 doing the cylinders myself and sending off the linings to Gord, also if any one wants to use the VW bus master cylinder from anyplace for around $20 i
t works fine, you just have to taper the end of push rod an inch back form tip removing about 1/16 on each side, doesn't weaken anything as the original only touches the piston at the very tip just as the VW one does.

Soooo do disc brakes work ten times better than stock, mine work fine now, as all is back the way they should be but having said that, yea they still aren't great brakes.

Sam's disc brakes are works of art, if anyone wants disk brakes and has their wife's credit card number, go for it and give us a report.</font> </font>

Don't give up yet--Sam was having everything specially made to fit so if someone out there can come up with something off a car that's laying around the wrecking yards that would work with an adapter, then its doable, biggest problem, I think, is finding something that fits inside our small 13 inch wheel. Wavey Dave speaks of front disc on his new dream car or is it nightmare, maybe he has a new trick we can use.</font>

I see that JC Whitney has a disc conversion for bugs. 30 years ago I had wanted to take the disc brakes off a Karman Ghia to put on my Bug. My bug had 15" wheels I believe. Wonder if there's any simularities to the Amphi? Whitney wanted something like $250 for the conversion kit. I thought it was a bargain.

We use disc kits for our Dune Buggies.
I'm going to mock one up and see what it would take on an Amphicar next month.

Hope you make it work but save some time, look at the bolt pattern and most importantly the size of the rotors, unless you use the VW wheels too, its a no go</font>

I was a teenager, but my VW bug had 15" wheels and I think my bus had 13" with drums. Never made sense to me. If there's a solution, I hope ECR will find it. Drums suck, period.

glencho

There's gotta be a simple solution for front disc on an Amphi.

The brake set up we use has no bolt pattern. We machine in the bolt
pattern we need. I run Chevy 5 bolt pattern on my VW dune buggy:

So pattern is no issue... just the other 100 things are an issue. ;-)
