2000 lbs of sheet metal shear followed me home. A beautiful stomp shear
that will make My quarter panels and battery trays easier to make. In
the shop I was at I walked by a fiberglass dingy like new. I told him My
plans for an Amphi trailer and asked what they (The dingys) usually sell
for. "Today they are 25 bucks" So yes I have My base for a trailer. I am

Dave, I talked to you a while back. I am a new member,
(the wife and I) and we went out and got a 63 and 64
amphi. I will need the lower fenders in the rear and
don't really want to attempt to make them myself or
use fiberglass. I know you are the expert at metal
work and wonder if you are going to produce the lower
rear fenders in steel and what will you sell a set
for? Also, do you recommend welding or using that new
adhesive from 3M 8115? I live close to Celina and am
looking forward to meeting club members next year.

If you are going to go to the expense and work of
having panels made, there is no question that you want
to weld them. TIG is great but MIG works well also.
If you lack the welding skills or equipment just fit
everything up nice and tight and then hire a
professional mobile welder to come to you for about
$50/hr.

A MIG is definitely a handy tool to have around. You
can usually find classes at the local tech school and
it does not take long to become proficient. TIG is
more expensive and a bit trickier but you can do some
beautiful work with one. Stay away from the flux core
welders for body work, you definitely want gas.
Hobart makes some nice inexpensive units (essentially
same as Miller). I picked up an HTP welder at a great
price that I am very pleased with.

For most work you will ever do on the Amphicar a 110
volt unit is more than sufficient.

And yes, I have been to Dave's hideaway amongst the
corn fields. He is the metal master when it comes to
Amphicars.

Hi Mike - I'm curious! I'm interested in your reasons for welding new panels
vs. using the "21st century" adhesives. It would seem that the adhesive
would not only secure the new panel to the vehicle but seal the panel as
well, all in one operation with no worries of warping the metal, burning
your car, garage, eyes, clothing, etc. Not to mention - very little grinding
and sealing afterward! I've been in the autobody repair industry for 30+
years and have been using the adhesives since they appeared on the market
with more than excellent results. The one and only failure experienced was a
1/4 panel coming loose after a 70 mile per hour impact (not in the water)!
I'm just curious - Gary.

Mike, Thanks for the info. My wife and I just joined
the club and have been having a good time gathering
information to get a car running. We have also had a
chance to meet some club members. I have found many
challenges in the few months I have had these cars.
The flag was a great ideal, we are hoping to have it
flying next summer. I do have one question related to
safety since I am a Safety Officer. I have heard
people talk about changing components like the
generator to an alternator with standard auto units.
Shouldn't these units be sealed to prevent sparks as
they are for boats to prevent fires and explosions?
