Hi All.

I was trying to come up with a catchy vanity plate to put on my Amphi
and was wondering if a survey was ever made of all of the custom worded
license plates owners have put on their cars? Thanks.

See you at Mt. Dora!

We don't have the concept of vanity plates in the UK. The "Registration Number" is issued to the car when it is new and generally stays with it for life - although there is a complex and expensive process to put old registration numbers (cherished numbers) on new cars. Anyway, my Amphicar registration is NMU10E, The NMU means it was issued in London, the 10 is a serial number and the E signifies the year (1967).
As the car was first used before 1973 I am also allowed to have simple white letters on a black background rather than reflective plates.
I also use the same registration on the front fenders but written as a name, Nmuioe asthe boat registration.

David,

Spooky indeed! There must be more than one red Amphi with that plate
on it. So far I have had 3 people try to sell me a red Amphi with
that plate on it to me. Oddly enough, the photos they sent me even
had a bloke who looked eerilly similar to you in the car! One was in
Canada (Remember him? That was fun!) and another from Australia.
Humm? ;) The plate that says "WET 7" on my site- is it from the UK
or custom?

We also have "year of mfg" plates in some states. If you have a 1964
plate with a number not currently used, you can register it to your
1964 car (for a fee of course!). Colorado has 159 different plates
available, but not YOM plates yet.

I have an Historical Vehicle plate on my Amphi
that reads 125K, which given the recent Barret-
Jackson auction sale of $124,200 isn't really
as crazy as it was back in 1999 when the Darwin
stork first brought Amphi into our lives.

Hi John, yes WET 7 would have been issued to a vehicle- probably in the 1950s - and transfered to subsequent cars. It is now on a Toyota as the Amphicar that it was on was sold and is in Austria. Short and interesting numbers are often sold and have high values - I think the record here is the equiv of about $500,000. First number issued was A1 in 1904- would be worth a fortune but that has never been offered for sale.

The letter system to show year worked well until we got to Z - it's now changed to numbers which change every March and September - very confusing !

I have now added a page to the amphicar.com site under "The Cars"
section. If any are missing, please send me a photo of the rear of the
car showing the plate.

John,
I thought you had mine but just looked at your site
and it's not there. I thought there was another site
with a list- maybe without pictures? I know it was
listed somewhere. I'll have to get you a picture.
