Stern magazine article & translation

Many International Amphicar Owners Club members may already have visited the
"Members Area" of the Club's website at
http://www.amphicar.com/memberslogin.html to view those fantastic aerial
photos shot from the helicopter at Celina 2001.

Well, now that the article has actually appeared in print in the September
13th issue of Stern, the article's original German text alongside an English
translation is also available exclusively for members in the same spot.

Once it hit the newsstands in Germany, the article stirred up some
controversy among the members of the German Amphicar Club, the Amphicar Club
Berlin e.V, so you might want check it out now...warts and all. Just log in
to the exclusive "Members Area" at http://www.amphicar.com/memberslogin.html
by following the directions at the top of the page. If you're really a
clubmember it's a snap.

Oh my......

I read it but still can't figure how he got so much wrong. I'm sure
Joel can explain that Ian is not a "Mexican". I don't think I've
ever heard Joel go off on Ian.

Likewise the part about Hugh.... I saw Hugh with a car. Was it a
mirage?

The part on Dave the Wave appeared to be accurate except the car
described wasn't the one Dave was driving. Sounds like the plans for
the brown wonder II.

And Finally ... I believe the Bilgemaster whe he denies saying there
were only 70 left.

All the mebers should read it. The pictures are great. I saw my
car. Glad it was Dave driving as I would have been a wreck!!!

Thanks for the translation Bilgemaster.
I agree with Eric, a factual fiasco at
best, but great photos. The one thing
I did appreciate is the "cult status"
we (amphibians) apparently have obtained.
Who'd a thunk it? Anyway it's worth a
read, especially since Bilgemaster went
to all the trouble to translate it for
us.

BTW... Dave the Wave, the photos
of those 3 underage bimbos have been
posted on a secret page of my web site.
I will release the web site address

...Just as a translation footnote, a close examination of the original
German text will reveal that the exact term used in the article to describe
Dave the Wave's services to this trio of scantily clad nubiles was a
"Spritztour". Literally translated this comes across into English as
"squirt-tour", which sounds like something I might pay a buck or two to see.
In the translation, rightly or wrongly, I ameliorated the raw suggestiveness
that "squirt-tour" might imply to other gutter-dwelling sensitivities such
as my own, with the more Disneyesque "splash-and-squirt tour", which is
still far closer to the truth than the rest of that article.

As if Dave would actually have a satellite navigation system installed in
his ride...Oh yeah, and MY Amphi is powered by a cold fusion generator...

Thanks Bill, great article - the reference to "a few more than 70 working
cars" will have come from one of the Germans that was there - it's the
figure the Amphicar Club Berlin always quote for cars in Germany, I guess
the Stern bloke just got it mixed up !

Actually there has been discussion in the group of putting a satelite
navigation system into the Amphicar. I didn't question it as it is
something that Dave might say.

I already own a satelite nagigation system from Garmin that I could
use in the car. It is handheld and works nicely. When I was
traveling the world I was in the habit of using it to capture the
latitude and longitude of the various places that I had visited.

I back off on that when the fellow from the US was arrested in Russia
for having "spy" equipment. He had the same unit I have.

Just reminding people that it was my car in Celina that Dave was
driving.

Though I am not eager to plumb the profound depths of the faultiness of this
article, it is also possible that the figure "70 Amphicars" may also have
come up on Thursday evening as a possible turnout of Amphicars that might
attend the weekend. I remember hearing something like that on Thursday
night, from Marc I think. But then, I really don't know where that 70
figure came from, only that I would certainly never claim that there were
only 70 fully-functioning Amphicars in America, which is what the text of
the article claims.

All I can say is that mindful of past inaccuracies in such pieces, I surely
DID offer the author Herr Richarz to look over his article's text prior to
publication in order to alert him to any possible errors in it, but he never
took advantage of this although he certainly has my email address.

It's a shame really, but it's certainly not the first time that some
journalist has sent a half-baked error-ridden piece about Amphicars to
press. Still, it really makes one wonder about all of the other crap one
reads, doesn't it?

....well, we are all used to inaccurate Amphicar articles....and I guess
this is no exception. It is, however, maybe one of the worst ones I've seen
(from an accuracy point of view). It really could have been a great article
if they had let Bill proof read it. The author really had some great stuff
in there describing the scene in Celina.
Certainly, I agree with Eric...I have never seen Joel go off on Ian, and the
articles description is completely insulting.
On the other hand....I am very curious to see those photos of Dave the Wave!
Send us the link, Amphipoda!

Thanks for the translation, Bilgmaster!

I have heard estimates of about 900 left worldwide, of
which approximately 500 still swim.

Anyone else care to comment on this?
