I have a question for the group, I,m getting ready to rebuild the
complete brake system. I am going to use silicone brake fluid in the
system. I would like to know everyone's feelings about silicone
fluid. I have three corvairs all are using silicone fluid and no
problems. I have talked with a lot of corvair people about this they
still think it is the best. The silicone fluid is not supposed to
draw moisture into the system unlike standard dot 3 and dot 4 in
vehicles that are not driven daily and in storage. Amsoil oils are
synthetic oils why not use silicone oils in the brakes? Help me
decide.

Mike, I've been using Silicone Fluid (DOT 5) in Amphi ('66 white) since '93
and it's been fine. No moisture or rust in the wheel cylinders. Make sure
you drain & totally flush the system of the old fluid. I can't remember if
I used alcohol (not rubbing) or tolulene from the marine paint store to
insure the system was clean & dry.

I've also put it in MetalBeast ('64 blue) before Christmas, but it hasn't
progressed to drivable status yet.

Good luck

Search the List Archives on the topic "brake fluid" at:

There's lots there from an earlier discussion on the subject of DOT3 vs.
DOT5, including a transcript of an article from _Auto Restorer_ (October
1999 [ v 11, n 10]. p. 6 and 23-25) at
