Re Registration fees

I personally agree with you completely, but generally bite the bullet. A $
10 to $20 registration fee is tolerable, but $40 is getting a bit out of hand.
I have talked at length with the chairman of the Lake Dora show. He is in
fact one of our biggest boosters, but fails to see the irony of our spending a
lot to keep the cars up and then having to pay to provide a significant
highlight to the show. The co-chairman of the show is hoping to work toward a
fee-less show, but it will be an uphill battle and I doubt he will succeed. .

One option in the Lake Dora situation, since there are not that many
Amphcars involved ( usually 12-15 ) is to simply hold our own get together
"informally" next year over at Mount Dora which is only 6 miles away and use that
public ramp. Both the Mount Dora Ramp and the Tavares Wooten Park ramp are
basically the same distance from everything - hotels, RV Parks, and our Saturday
night Amphicar Banquet location. We really did luck out when Carol and I,
while searching for a suitable Banquet site, managed to find that place about 6
years ago. We could still make ourselves available at the boat show IF the
Lake Dora Boat show makes us welcome for the mid day parade and splash in, but
otherwise not be involved with their show. If we did that, they just might
rethink the situation. I told the chairman that we can do with the Goodie bags
and a Boat Poster, etc.

Contrary to one thing you said, though there are a number of good ramps in
Florida, with the protracted drought we have had for several years, a number
of the previously usable ramps sites are not currently usable or are a bit of
a problem. I had to get pulled out at one site. An interesting side story
is when Peter Fredsall and I were in that TV series "101 cars You Must Drive,"
we only did ONE splash in because I didn't know until we went in that it
was much shallower than the last time I was in there. I had suggested that lake
for them, as it is large and has 2 good side by side ramps. On TV, you can
see that my Amphicar lists to starboard after splashing in and since the
host, Alonzo Bodden, is a big guy, several people mentioned to me that they could
see he was causing it to list. The fact of the matter is that the wheels on
my driver's side when going in were running on the bottom which is why we
tipped his way ! Otherwise, that is a really nice lake and good ramp. A number
of ramp sites are still good, but many are currently marginal. We had a
little more rain this past year than we have had for several years which has
improved the overall situation some.

Here in Central Florida, we have so many fee-less get togethers such as Old
town in Kissimmee and a really nice one if the weather is good in New Smyrna (
20 miles from my house just south of Daytona ) on the 2nd Saturday
afternoon each month. They close off the streets and we have 400 plus or minus cars
including some Duesenbergs and other fancy cars frequently. Peter Fredsall and
I sometimes are there together with our Amphicars and we get the usual
"gosh, I've never seen one of these up close before, and here there are two !"
and of course the constant queswtion we all get "Do you ever take it into the
water ?" Does a bear do his business in the woods ?. Kellys Cruise News to
which you referred lists a number of weekly get togethers in our area - almost
all 7 days of the week. Every Friday night here in DeLand and Sunday
afternoon at Hamptons Restauant on International Speedway Blvd. on the north side of
DeLand.

Just now while I was typing, they showed the upcoming week's forecast- 73
degrees starting tomorrow and up to 78 and 79 through the week. Tough, but we'll
survive ! Do all of you fence sitters hear this - it's summer down here
for the Swim-In. You all come ! ! !
