Re: Registration for a car show - subject of Entrance fees

A fact that needs to be in the mix in the current discussion is that
starting last year, the public must pay a daily entrance fee at the Lake Dora Boat
show. This ought to at least be a consideration to offset the need for a
Registration Fee increase. Something else that sets Amphicars apart from other
vehicles at car shows is that they are maintenance intensive. They require
more than just vacuuming and polishing, are far more prone to rust damage and
the cost to correct rust damage can be significant. Amphicars need to be
lubricated ideally after every day or weekend of swimming at a minimum. How many
owners pull back the drive shaft boots and lubricate the inner U-joints
regularly. If they do, how quick and easy is that "simple" task ? If a drive shaft
needs replacing, are they cheap to replace or repair and is it a simple job
? Is it the kind of job every owner is capable of doing him or her self ?
Even if the drive shafts can be lubricated from the outside, this alone
requires time and removal of the rear wheels. This does not even get into the high
costs involved if a transmission should need to be rebuilt or replaced. This
is not like the 10 minute job for an experienced operator to remove the old
vertical fan VW engines. So it is not just a matter of the validity of
Registration fees, but also the fact that Amphicars are a different breed of
vehicle and require more attention than most other vehicles. These are things to
at least be aware of which bear on the subject. We love Amphicars, but
because of their unique attributes, they generate a level of interest, honest
excitement and actual thrills for many of the people attending such an event that
should be factored in so that the subject of Entrance Fees might warrant a
little more consideration.

Vic,
Just because Amphicars are high maintenance and the owners pay more towards keeping their cars operational that they should have no regestration fees or a reduced fee? What about the folks who attend with their 80k boats? Should their fees be reviewed? I respectfully disagree. Most of us knew what we were getting into prior to purchasing their Amphicars. Without knowing much about these cars back then (1999), I had a figure in my mind to plan on spending a minimum of 10k for the restoration. But, because we spend a lot of money on these cars....I don't understand your logic.
Maybe it should be made clear just exactly what the registration fee is for. Is there a website I could go to or do you or Gord S. know?
The wife and I are considering coming down and at this point, the 40 bucks isn't a concern. But again, what do I get for that money.

Thanks,

Brian Crombie

Re: Registration for a car show - subject of Entrance fees

I still don't understand why our choice to own or collect a maintainance intensive collector car should entitle us to a discounted admission fee, even if it does draw more interest than more conventional vehicles. If I choose to buy a Ferrari, which easily costs as much as an Amphicar to maintain, and often draws a lot of attention as well, how does that entitle me to a discount from the organizer of the event. Actually the converse might be true. If I can only afford to restore and maintain a Pinto, then why should I pay a larger fee than the Amphicar or Ferrari owner, Is it because my car draws less spectators that them? Our admission fee entitles both of us to all of the same benefits of the show, and although the Amphicar may draw more attention to the show, the organizers are not "hiring" us to increase attendance. They are free to waive or lower fees if they feel that the draw is worth doing that, but we are not "Entitled" to a reduced fee simply because our cars are more expensive to maintain. The truth is that we love to swim our cars, and we love the attention that they get, and our maintenance is not really increased at all by attending this (or any) event, as we would probably be swimming elsewhere if we were not at this event.
Just my 2 cents worth.

What? You want me to share my thoughts on the topic of 'lubricating my
"drive shaft"? Nah. Too easy.

Love and Kisses,
