Prop shafts and rear seals

I am trying to replace the rear seals at the prop ends of the rear prop shafts. With the props off, and rear circlips, I can't get the shafts out of the housing (tried pounding, and an impact hammer). The bearings are fine, with the shafts spinning freely.

Perhaps I can change the rear seals without removing shafts? I can see the two rear seals. Can I just pick out the old seals, and push two new ones inside?

The shafts are spinning freely, with just light finger pressure; no dragging, and no vibration. I decided to leave the shafts in place. I was able to remove the rear seals, and will replace them. That should keep water out and grease in.
