Two years ago I took our Amphicar to our home on the
lake at Clear Lake, CA for a little rest and
rehabilitation. It now has a new paint job, ignition,
carb & fuel pump, wheel bearings and brake cylinders.
Thanks to a neighbor mechanic, who drives by our place
on his way to work, I recieved a lot of help, advice
and encouragement. He has his own boat ramp at his
house, so I can easily pull up for a little help and
advice. That is exactly what I did on the day of our
launch party. It seems I had been running all day on
the battery only, with no charge; fixed that!
We held a launch party on Labor Day and invited all
the neighbors who had stopped by to ask about the car
as I worked on it in our garage. We had quite a crowd
and everyone had a chance for a ride. The pictures
show only a few. Clear Lake is in wine country and
the champagne was brewed from local Lake County pears;
the predominant crop before the vinyards took over.
"Lady of the Lake," Pear Champagne was great; and no,
I did not break a bottle over the bow.
"Our Yacht" enjoyed the day, as did my wife Carole and
I; our daughter took lots of pictures and it is a
pleasure to share these with you.
Amphicars are definitely a magnet and mine drew in two
old friends from years ago. The first was a teacher I
hired for his first job 30 years ago, about 200 miles
from Clear Lake. The second was a former Amphicar
owner who participated in a Swim-in I organized on the
Sacramento River, about 100 miles away. Both saw the
car by the house and stopped to chat.
We are now back at our home in Southern California,
but I hope to get back to the lake again before the
season is over.
