Hi Guys,
Before we imported the original strips, we too relied on generic
strips. Here's how to ensure rattle free windows. Get the thickest
profile of the two vertical strips you can find (no. 11-37-20 vent
post and 11-36-49 door post). These will prevent window rattling,
but not leaks along the horizontal strips.
Here's how to ensure leak proof doors. Generic horizontal strips
are always manufactured slightly thinner, as they will fit more
applications. However, this means leaks in Amphicar through the
strip glass gap. Before installing the generic strips, apply two
thicknesses of electrical tape to the body side of the strip
to "push" it closer to the glass. (Be careful; don't put the tape
on the clip area.)
In spite of using original design horizontal strips, Amphicar found
that water still wicked past the window glass. In North American
models, starting in 1965, Amphicar supplied splash rubber and
decorative mouldings to wipe water away from the brush strip area.

If you enjoy detective work, loosen an inside door panel along the
bottom edge and stuff some paper towels on the inside of the doors.
Then roll up your window and (using a simple garden hose) spray
along the top of the door and see how much water comes in. If you
work at it, you'll keep every last drop of cruiser wake in the lake
and not at the bilge pump pick-up.
