Flooding in UK

David,

Been seeing lots of Noahesque scenes of LOTS of heavily flooded English
towns here on CNN in Germany. Are you and yours all OK and keeping
reasonably dry over there? Some of those Midlands towns are looking a
lot like Venice during a gondoliers strike. Sweet Jeebus...

And while I'm in a euro frame of mind, being in Germany and all, here's
a message for any of our German Amphicar Club Berlin e.V. friends who
watch this List:

Phew - where to start... On Thursday and Friday we had almost a foot of rain - tropical non stop, almost all roads closed, literally thousands of people stranded and sleeping in cars and their workplaces. On a personal level my 11 year old was on his way back from a school trip and spent 12 hours stuck on a motorway before arriving ata high school that was turned in to an emergency centre. The school itself was also cut off from the town it serves. This was around midnight on Friday. My sons friend is a diabetic and he was running out of insulin. 

Amphicar to the rescue - Needed to travel about 12 miles but many of the roads were blocked with abandoned vehicles. In some cases the water was so deep the vehicles that got stuck early on were submerged - and it was dark and still raining. Also some of the vehicles were semi-floating - I will never forget the image of squeezing past a part submerged XC90 with wipers going and alarm screaming that suddenly moved....

At one point I went past the local gas station which was under about 6 feet of water and Amphi headlights were reflecting off the petrol and oil floating on the surface. 

Anyway just after midnight we arrived at the school and were able to give my friends son his insulin. But the school had two loaves of bread and halfa pint of milk and almost two hundred schoolchildren who hadn't eaten for more than 12 hours. 

We rang the supermarket the other side of town, the water had come up so fast the manager, staff and 50 or so customers were all trapped. They were happy to supply what we needed but transport - well only Amphicar would do as to reach there involved flood water 6 foot deep but with a bit of dry road in the middle. 

Through the night I made a number of trips there to bring bread, milk and other supplies back to the school so the children could have breakfast. 

After the flash floods of Friday the water reached the rivers and up they came so Saturday and today the rescues continued. A very pregnant lady enjoyed her first Amphi ride to a house where an ambulance could reach her. 

It's now getting worse. There are 3 roads in to our town (Upton upon Severn) One is now too deep for Amphicar, it was OK earlier as the wheels were still on the ground but there is a serious cross current (estimate well over 10mph) that even the inflatable boats struggle with and now it's deeper it's no good for Amphi. 

The bridge on the road I've been using has now been closed as cracks have appeared, a major bridge in a nearby town has collapsed as the water has washed away the foundations. 

The other way in is OK but almost 2 miles of road are floaded to floating depth so it takesa long time. 

It gets worse, the local water treatment works is now underwater and the pumps have been turned offso the taps are running dry, and the services aretrying to stop the water reaching the electricity substation and taking out power for about 250,000 homes. 

It has now stopped raining so hopefully it won't get much worse but will takea long time for things to get back to normal. 

We are fine, our house is on top of the hill so dry, we have plenty of food and water and we havea generator and fuel. 

Amphicar may be out again tomorrow but the Army and all the other rescue services arrived in force today with there own amphibians (argocats) so less need for me now.

I agree. Fascinating story.

Every time I see a story of flooding somewhere on the TV news I
always secretly wonder whether I will hear about an Amphicar in
rescue action.

And now there's proof!

Guys, quick update, water is starting to go down here but of course there is only one way for it all to get to the sea and that is via the towns of Tewkesbury and Gloucester. 

The water pumping works in Tewkesbury is out of action and over 100,000 people are using bottled water delivered by the Army. Overnight it came very close to a national emergency as near Gloucester the main electrical power station for the south west serving half a million people was under serious threat. Helecopters were dropping bags of sand to make a mile long barrier around it,all of the fire engines in the area were sent there to pump the flood water out - thehigh water mark was passed in the early hours - they were just two inches from loosing it.

Amphicar is now safely back in the garage and I might finally geta chance to fit the new Friese clutch I think it really deserves.

Dear David, We were in touch some time ago...you may remember I crossedthe Channel from Marble Arch to the Frankfurt Motor show in n1965with my Amphi which was stolen by the Sales Manager of Sidney Marcus.As you know I have located the car which was for a long time missing and the present keeper does not appear to want to sell it. I have spoken to lawyers who say I have a strong case but I would rather get it back at a reasonable price from the guy who has it. However this letter is not about that but to identify in the first picture on your www.amphicars.com which shows three people in an Amphicar the man on the left. He was known in the motor trade as "laughing lavatory brush" and it was he who stole my car! The police informed me he had convictions for fraud and for the record his real name was Ian Metcalfe. All best wishes and hope we meet

Ahhhhh Babelfish....The online translation wonder! Did I ever tell you
about the time my wife was back in Moscow for a visit of a couple of
months, and being the swell guy that I am, but my Russian being not that
swell, I wrote her a nice little letter in her native Russian by putting
English sentences into one of those online English-Russian translators
and then cutting and pasting and printing out the results? Quite proud
of myself, I showed a copy of the results to a Russian buddy of mine,
and once I got him to stop laughing, he explained how where I had
inputted the English sentence, "every evening I rush home hoping to find
one of your letters in the box", the translator had spit out the Russian
equivalent of "whenever the darkness grows I enter an olympic event to
exhume you optician's eye chart". I suspect my wife still thinks I have
a deep and rather more poetic inner life than is actually the case...I'm
about as deep as Sponge Bob.

Sehr interessant Bilgey. Ich bin neidisch. Was fur einen Deutscher du bist. Ich kann meistens von dein Unterhaltung ubersetzen, aber dein Deutsch istviel besser als mein.Du erkennst mein schlect Bayerish ist wirklich schrecklish. Wir waren vor eine Monat in Nova Scotien aber dass is nicht so weit weg wie du bist. My sohn liebt in London und hat hier geflogen und wir hat fur eine Woche gesegelt susammen auf einen 95 Fuss Americanische schooner Segelschjiffvon Maine.Das ganzen Woche hat wunderbar Wetter gehabt mit wenig Regen nur zwei nachts and nichtzu viel nebel. Zwei tage had ganz schon Wind das freut echt Segelmanner.

PS: I have been in a couple situations over the years, but often found the local authorities either had things under control, or didn't know how to make use of an Amphicar. Did get written up in the paper a couple times, when I was able to help.

After the flash floods of Friday the water reached the rivers and up they came so Saturday
and today the rescues continued. A very pregnant lady enjoyed her first Amphi ride to a house where an ambulance could reach her. It's now getting worse. There are 3 roads in to our town (Upton upon Severn) One is now too deep for Amphicar, it was OK earlier as the wheels were still on the ground but there is a serious cross current (estimate well over 10mph) that even the inflatable boats struggle with and now it's deeper it's no good for Amphi. The bridge on the road I've been using has now been closed as cracks have appeared, a major bridge in a nearby town has collapsed as the water has washed away the foundations. The other way in is OK but almost 2 miles of
road are floaded to floating depth so it takesa long time. It gets worse, the local water treatment works is now underwater and the pumps have been turned offso the taps are running dry, and the services aretrying to stop the water reaching the electricity substation and taking out power for about 250,000 homes. It has now stopped raining so hopefully it won't get much worse but will takea long time for things to get back to normal. We are fine, our house is on top of the hill so dry, we have plenty of food and water and we havea generator and fuel. Amphicar may be out again tomorrow but the Army and all the other rescue services arrived in force today with there own amphibians (argocats) so less need for me now. David C </blockquote>
