The tube is a gas boil evaporating tube like John said. Most of them are carboned up in the manifold and so not work any way. If you remove your carb and look down the intake you can see the small hole. I ran a small wire throught it to clean it out.

There's a thingy, an 1/8' brass tube attached and hanging down from my
exhaust/intake manifold and I haven't a clue what it is for. It
doesn't seem to draw any air with the engine running. At first I
thought it was a drain for the intake. Didn't much like the idea of
the bilge collecting gas. It may go to the exahust side, but why? I
don't find anything in the books on it. It doesn't go to the
distributor. That line comes off the base of the carb. It's a
mystery to me.

Okay, I have confirmed that the line goes to the Intake. So it must be a manifold drain. Why would anyone want to vent raw fuel into an engine compartment?

Glenn - In the Herald which the engine came from, the extra fuel
that boils out of the carb would run down and drop on the ground. In
a boat you can't have fuel in the bilge so the idea was it would
collect in the "U" shaped tube, then evaporate.

Fine and dandy, My tube was a straight shot to the bilge. Didn't mstter. It was clogged. Think I'll plug the line.

As was my distribiter (sp)advance lines.Clogged solid. I had this itty bitty hose coming off the 1/8" carb line to the 1/8" dist intake. I couldn't find a line to match so I' m replacing the hard line to 1/8".

With the new exhaust and ignition advance I'm certain to burn rubber!

glenn

I gotta nother question.

Glenn -

I would not replace the hard advance line with rubber. As the engine
compartment gets warm and your line gets older and softer, the
vacuum will likly collapse the line affecting your advance (that
would suck... not! - OK, that was bad!). That is why it is a hard
line to start with. Replace it with a hard line or try to unclog it.
The fuel drip tube is another story. I prefer mine to operate, it's
easy to replace with tubing and fittings available at any hardware
store. Be sure it's about 14" long, bent in a "U" shape in the
middle.

Interesting thought about the V-dub carb. I may give it a try on one
of my cars. I have dual SUs on my driver now. Cold blodded at first,
once it starts to warm up, it runs much better. When the Solex carbs
are properly tuned and in good operating condition, they are a good
choice. Only problem is the boiled gas syndrome. Proper phenolic
gaskets will cure that almost everytime.

I have a Gordon muffler on my car, and it is very quiet and I get a
lot of comments on how quiet it is. Are you sure what your hearing
is not the cooling fan noise? That is a common thing with the
Amphicar especially from inside the car.

Re: Re: engine manifold mystery

<table>
Good info John:

I do intend to run a vaccuum hard line. It's just going to be a larger diameter to match the dist & carb fittlings. It should suck much better.

The evaporator tube is no where near 14" long or bent in a U. That's a good idea and I'll install a new one.

You just solved the mystery of the phonolic gasket. My carb studs are too short and I was thinking about removing the gasket. I'll look for longer studs.

The muffler noise may be my imagination. The engine truck lid is removed and the tailpipe extention isn't on yet. I'm going to drive it to the local muffler shop to have that piece made up. It's the shop I used to expand the J tube to properly fit into the muffler. And get this...There's a rumor that the muffler shops owners father is the original owner of an Amphi that hasn't moved in 25+ years. Can't wait to get back there!!!

I'm going to investigate the VW carb further. My VW Solex's were so simple and easy to work on. The electric choke was great. Rigging athrottle cablemay take some engineering.
