I also think that every person on this list should sens an email to fraud@ebay .com reporting that auction #270338661572 is a fraud.

It must be because immediately after having followed our distinguished
moderator Mike Israel's call to alert fraud@ebay.com of the malfeasance
being perpetrated, I then emailed the fraudster posing as a serious
buyer. I guess I must have been very convincing...though I have to
wonder how he or she will answer a couple of the questions I posed
without the Amphi on hand, namely:

1. What does that sticker say on the glove compartment?
2. Are those the original "Schnabeltier" brand tires?

By the way, for those who never got through "Hooked on Teutonic
Phonics", the word "Schnabeltier" means "platypus", so I'm just as giddy
as a girly Schulmädchen waiting for the next response...Ja!

What is his scam?
He deleted all the bids with a minute to go.

Well, one of the simple scams is to try to get the winning bidder to wire
him a deposit or a "down." He cashes the wire order, and disappears. He
could even solicit non-high bidders, telling them that the supposed winning
bidder withdrew, so he could try working the scam on several people at once.
He might say something like "The winner was flake and withdrew; you are the
next highest bidder, and I'll let you have it at your bid, but I need 10%
down in 24 hours or I'll just go to the next bidder." When you have been
bidding on your dream car, it's easy to get talked into something stupid.

BTW, another scam flag is that the account is new, and there are no other
items ever bought or sold by that account. I would have zero trust in such
an account.

Chas:? I used an alternate ebay name because I was barred from bidding by the "seller" through using my real ebay name (mccop) after asking a question.? So, I placed a bid with the alternate name and then immediately requested through ebay the sellers information.? Before he could cancel my bid, I had the info and then posted it.? He did, however, later cancel my bid.

I can look for the link and send it to you if you are unable to locate it.

Regards,
Richard

You folks have cleared up a bit of the fog concerning this guy. The bidding
the first time advanced slowly, I asked him questions twice which he never
answered, but toward the last hour or so of the auction, the bids made no sense
- the number of bids and the total amount supposedly bid went down from I
believe over $30K and it ended with I believe something like $7600 and 13 bids -
all out of whack with what the situation had been. Somewhere, I wrote the
status as far as number of bids and current bid over the last 2 days or so.
Then when it was all over, the next day, we got his goofy letter saying he
wanted $11250 with a deposit of $3,250 and the balance when it was delivered and
that the total included shipping and insurance ! What a nut case. He never did
answer any of my specific questions. Along with my questions, I gave him my
phone number and asked for a call, but of course received none. Somewhere I
stuck the first auction printouts I made, but can't see where at the moment.

The scam is as follows.

As seller, he gets to see the ebay id of all bidders. After the auction he will contact each of them with an offer to sell the car directly. All you need to do is send him a deposit, preferably by western union, asap.
