Double lip seal

I'm going to be taking my 66 for it's first swim when I get home from work
and was wondering if there was any way to test the tranny seals. I'd like to
know before water is pouring out the starter if they are bad? I'm going to
use a garden hose to check the bilge for leaks. Any areas to pay close
attention too that I might not think of?

Remove the back seat and make a dip stick so you can easily check the level of
oil in the land transmission (I think the dimensions are on my website somewhere
but you can probably work it out yourself). Then check it on level ground just
before you go in, have a dip for a couple of minutes, come out and check again,
you are looking for the level rising and/or the oil turning white and creamy. If
all is well go in for longer but check again before driving home. If you have
water in the trannie don't drive unless you really have to, better to get a
recovery truck and drain and change the oil as soon as you can.

If the seals are really bad then oil runs down the driveshaft tunnels and drips
by the rear wheels, also when afloat, water comes out the top of the land
trannie life a fountain !

Thanks Dave, I hadn't thought of checking the oil level. Silly me I was
thinking up all kinds of pain in the rear techniques.

Hi, I was thinking, if you run the car until the transmission is good and
hot, I mean 60 mph for 20 minutes, so it is hot and the oil is thin. Then
lift the car so that the rear tires are hanging, turn them a few times around
and let them hang. After a couple minutes get a flash light and look up the
tunnel for any sign of fresh oil. Take a good look at the drive shafts check
to see if they look the same. Are they in the transmission the same amount?
Do the shafts look the same? Did the drive shafts scope out the same amount?
If one tire is even a little higher it may be that a shaft is not sliding out
fully and you will get water in the trannie.

Right now the seal is flush with the tranny's surface.

Hi Randy,
That is the way we have always installed ours.
Two things, you will want to coat the seal lips with grease as the outer lip
does not get any lube if the inner lip is doing its job and will mark the
shaft.
If you are using your old shafts they will probably have a groove from the
outside lip of your old seals. I always try to remove that groove using Emory
paper or better yet a die grinder with a Scottish Bright pad attached. It
always surprises me that the rubber seal will make that groove and still be
water tight. When you go in the water the seal has to stretch to come out of
that groove and the shaft is a little larger so it stretches the seal, then
out of the water the seal has to shrink back to fit the smaller groove.
If you have your tranny out put the drain plug back in before you reinstall
it. You don't want to do your contortionist act to get that bilge'n plug in.
