Thanks Dave, I hadn't thought of checking the oil level. Silly me I was
thinking up all kinds of pain in the rear techniques.
Craig, waiting for break up in Alaska...

Remove the back seat and make a dip stick so you can easily check the level
of
oil in the land transmission (I think the dimensions are on my website
somewhere
but you can probably work it out yourself). Then check it on level ground
just
before you go in, have a dip for a couple of minutes, come out and check
again,
you are looking for the level rising and/or the oil turning white and
creamy. If
all is well go in for longer but check again before driving home. If you
have
water in the trannie don't drive unless you really have to, better to get a
recovery truck and drain and change the oil as soon as you can.
If the seals are really bad then oil runs down the driveshaft tunnels and
drips
by the rear wheels, also when afloat, water comes out the top of the land
trannie life a fountain !

I'm going to be taking my 66 for it's first swim when I get home from work
and was wondering if there was any way to test the tranny seals. I'd like to
know before water is pouring out the starter if they are bad? I'm going to
use a garden hose to check the bilge for leaks. Any areas to pay close
attention too that I might not think of?
Thanks, Craig
