[Marty & Caryl]

Not that we've used our car more than twice this summer, our shotgun
door has a problem with latching. I adjust the striker plate until
it does catch and close good until the next time when I have to go
thru the same adjustments again and again and again?
What gives? My driver side door always works well.

Marty,

I had a similar problem with the passenger door on one of my cars. I
could adjust it and adjust it but still the door was hard to latch.
I even removed the latch mechanism from inside the door to figure out
what was wrong with it. I'm pretty good at figuring things out but I
couldn't find anything wrong with it. Still the door wouldn't latch
easily. Finally, out of frustration, I ordered a new latch mechanism
from Hugh. That solved the problem and now the door latches smoothly
and easily. I never could figure out what was wrong with the old
latch mechanism and, in fact, I keep it around here just in case I
want to try again to figure it out someday. Those latch mechanisms
can be mysterious.

Marty,

Be sure the 2 bolts are tight. You can place a thin piece of
aluminum can behind them to help keep them in place. They sometimes
get worn just enough not to work properly but otherwise look good to
the eye.

Also, make sure you use some sort of impact tool to get those screws
tight on the latch piece on the door jam. Tightening it down iwth a
regular screwdriver just will not cut it, as much as it gets smacked
around.

I had the same problem on my right side door and I spoke to Hugh Gordon
while I had the door apart and could see inside it.
The window alignment post # 11-36-59 can interfer with the door latch
mechanism. With the door panel off, look inside the door with a
flashlight and make a mark on the latch where it is closest to the
window post. Remove the latch and grind about 1/8" off the area you
marked. That should take care of the problem. It did mine. Hope this
helps.

Perfect timing for door problem to come up.
The car I am restoring right now was at one of those shops(you know the
guys that do Rolls-Royces, Packard, etc) Basicly all they did was strip the
car, acid dip it, put on a white primer(that is falling off in chunks) and
do a real nice job on the doors,$20,000.00 later the customer say stop!!!
and it sits in a drafty building for the 4 years till he meets me at last
years swim in.
Well I have been working on it now for a coulpe of months, found the frame
was roted out
but got the car back and stright etc.
went to put the great looking doors on and bingo.. same thing, out a
thumb distance at the bottom. curved in at the corner,, you name it.
To cur the problem I took a cut of wheel and made a slot across the bottom
sill as close to outer door as poss. pushed door into proper shape, spot
welled and tested till perfect.
All rubber, and locking units should be in place and even body work(bondo)
should be done with door on car.without the inner seal on body you should
just be able to pull a paper threw the seal all the way around the door at
the same presure.
