If its right above the valve cover, then if you remove it, you can actually
get the valve cover off to adjust the valves. Otherwise, you can't get the
valve cover off without pulling the engine. Also, if you are pulling the
engine and transmission as one unit, then removing the plate also gives you
just a tad more room for manipulation as you thread the whole shebang over
the transom.

Guys, the valve cover comes off fine, but you have to remove that part to
get the cylinder head off, and yes it as an afterthought - when the Amphicar
body was designed the engine was in a slightly different position, you can
imagine that someone in Germany in 1961 had an "Oh S**t" moment when they
realised that with the engine in the new and final position slightly further
forward it was impossible to remove the head without taking the complete
block out !
