A lot of us outside of the USA no longer buy USA made products because of the situation there so over the last couple of weeks I’ve been looking for alternatives to Amsoil for my Amphicars.
Having used Amsoil exclusively for over 30 years with great results I thought it might be a challenge but good news is there are plenty of alternatives out there. It’s early days - this has all happened very quickly - so will need a couple of years of real world testing to be sure which are best but the technical datasheets indicate there are products that at least match Amsoils claims and in some cases exceed them.
For a start I’ve switched to a 75w90 full synthetic marine oil from Westway Oils in the UK for the Amphicar transmission, this has the necessary anti corrosive and anti foaming agents, it is GL5 but also safe with yellow metals which is super important.
For the grease I’m going to try a blue marine grease called K323 made by Morris Lubricants, also in the UK. This exceeds the spec of the old blue Amsoil HD grease.
If there are any issues with these then European companies Agip, Fuchs and Motul all look to have suitable synthetic marine products.
Anyway, I’ll report back later in the year how I’m getting on with them. Wheel bearings will be the big test. It will be interesting to see if the blue grease changes colour with too much heat and water as Amsoil did.
