Yes folks, as of yesterday afternoon the sunken Amphi has seen the
light! It looks beautiful, air in the tires, virtually no rust (at
least until it dries out) and little obvious damage.

They used 2 lift bags to get it to the surface and then used 85' of
rope to pull her onto shore. She rolled up and out of the water
without a fight. Slight damage to a fin and a flooded engine but
nothing else appears to be worse for the wear. Another red Amphi is
well on her way to being saved! Stay tuned....

OK, I can entice you all with one picture. (SEE On Shore.jpg) This
picture is how she (she is still wet) looked just minutes after
rolling up on shore for the first time in 15 years. The videos and
the rest of the pictures will be shown (as long as I get them by
then) in Celina.

This is a great story. Amazing, the rear quarters
look to be in better shape than many of the Amphis out
there today. Perhaps underwater storage is the key to
longevity!

I've always said there are no ugly Amphis,
but I have to admit that poor Amphi looks
like a homeless dude I use to know. Sad
to see in such condition... on the other
hand it's wonderful to see that Amphi on
dry land and about to get a home. Praise
be upon those who raised the Amphi and may
the amphibious hord welcome the newcomer.

Sounds familiar, I remember opening the door to back off an island at our
local reservoir after a tremendous downpour. The windows were really fogged up
and I was not thinking. "The Big gulp"

Where exactly had the car sunk? Looks like a mountain lake. Kind of surprising
that it hadn't been covered over with silt and mud. Of course, if you get low
and calm enough, there's not much oxygen in the water to allow rusting.

I think it's amazing that the tires still had air!

Yes Dan, I know for a fact why it sank. I have first hand knowledge from the
owner and driver about the day it happened and what caused it to happen.
I've been in touch with him now for about three weeks. He called me
yesturday and we had a laugh about it since it went down 16 years ago.
Plain and Simple. Four guys out for a nice swim in their family's new car,
having a few cocktails, and some idiot opened the door . Therefore they
didn't even turn it in to insurance. Also, I'm informed that that amphicar
will swim again without a doubt and probably within a year.

I have been speaking with the owner for several weeks and he really
was not to interested in letting the world know the details of what
happened. To respect his wishes and privacy I have kept the details
to myself unless he specifically said it was OK to reveal them.

The car went down 15+ years ago in a freshwater lake in Mass. without
any injuries. The owner is a really great guy with a good sense of
humor about the whole story.

I have given them a list of things to do to preserve and protect the
car. If they do those things quickly, the car can be swimming again
in short order. Doubtful if it could be done within a year though.
All electrical / rubber and bearings will need to be replaced. All it
takes is a microscopic line of rust on a bearing to create a failure
quickly. The car is now in the air. This is the bad part. Untreated
steel will start to rust within hours (Literally).

I will be happy to share anything he gives the OK for.
