Stuck bearing race

I went to repack my front wheel bearings. One of the inner bearings completely fell apart in my hand. But before I can put in the replacement bearing I need to remove the inner race which is still on the spindle. I tried popping it off with a pry bar..no luck. I tried a gear puller, but there's not enough room on the backside to hook it on. Any ideas?

<font face="Arial" size="2">Randy - You have to get the pressure points just right - two flat blade screwdrivers or pry bars which must be exactly 180 degrees from each other and push both back hard at the same - it then pops forward and off. </font>

Any ideas?

Randy - I use an angle grinder to cut a groove through it about 75%
(being VERY careful you do not scar the spindle), then use a cold
chisel in the groove with a good smack of a hammer it will split
allowing it to be pulled off by hand.

David's method (also what the book says) does sometimes work to.

You need TWO pry bars used simultaneously, one on each side. Should pop right off.

Just be careful of the smashed knuckles and the face flat against the
front fender when the pry bars slip off the race! I always use the die
grinder/chisel method. No more broken noses for me!

I've done both the prying and the grinder route, usually giving the
prying a 1st try in case it moves and falling back on the grinder when
its a little stubborn.

As for getting the race out of the hub, I just weld a little bead
right down the middle of the race and as it cools and shrinks, it will
just about all out of the hub on its own. <G> ... no drilling, no
notches, etc.....

That sounds like a great approach for anyone with a MIG. Will have to try that next time.

The MIG is also the BEST way to handle a broken head in the stud. Just take a nut and tack weld it to the broken stud even if it is broken flush with the head. No need to worry that you might somehow weld the nut to the cast iron block, simply not possible. Even with a weak weld, the heating and cooling usually frees up the stud so that it comes out extremely easily with hand tools. Having discovered this method, I would never again even consider an extractor of any sort.

Randy,

One other way that I was successful on both sides was to use a gear puller
on the "outer" edge of the bearing. Most people try to grab the bearing
from the rear, but since the rollers are gone you could grip the front of
the bearing (on the lip) and with the use of a "C" clamp holding the gear
puller in place, gently prying the bearing off the hub. It saves a lot of
time cutting hardened steel and possible problems with the Dremel cutting
something else. If you had a third hand it works really nice and easy.
