Wife and I got invited to a 5 course dinner at a very
exclusive and private country club so they could
auction a ride in our Amphi as well as a host of other
goodies. The auction was a fund raiser for
underpriveleged kids that we have donated rides for in
the past. They decided to do the good stuff, including
the Amphi, a $10,000 diamond bracelet, etc. in a live
instead of silent auction format during dinner
thinking that would generate more bids. And did it
ever. The high bid for a 20 minute ride in our Amphi
was $550!
Now for the small world part. When parking Amphi in
prominent spot in front of the club as directed, a
60ish gentleman comes over to talk to me and tell me
he remembers the cars from his younger days. I'm
thinking it's the same old story of seeing one on a
lake, etc. when he tells me that he was born and
raised in Germany in the town where the Amphicar
factory was. Turns out he is also a fairly prominent
artist and sculpture and Laurie and I ended up being
seated at the same table with him and his wife 40
years after he saw these cars rolling out of the
factory. Now that's a small world. You never know
where Amphi will get you admitted. Now if I could only
figure out how to afford the country club membership
which had a suggested value on the auction sheet of
$30,000- don't know whether that was annual or
lifetime but you know what they say, 'if you have to
ask....'
