Shifter question

Over the past month or so my gear shift lever felt like it was getting
loose. When I tried to put it into third gear the gear shift lever would
travel well into the passengers leg area. I removed the seat and floorboard
and everything is tight and third gear is less than an inch away from first
gear, however I can push the gear shift lever way over to the right when it
is in neutral. When it is pushed over far enough the mounting bracket P/N
11-43-02 hits the hull and deflects it. Could the spring P/N 11-73-38 be
worn out? It feels tight. Is there some other way to limit the travel of
the gear shifter?

If you have the floorboard still out, Warren, check
the set screw that locates the connector hub/ball onto
the shifter rod back at the transmission. There is a
detent in the rod for the set screw point. If that's
loose it could allow excess play. Good luck!
