RE contributors identifying themselves

You are absolutely right. I have been unsuccessfully lobbying for this
idea for several years. I too like to know from whom a note is sent and feel
everyone should identify themselves in some way - either by their name or
their city or some way of knowing with whom you are conversing. I
personally would like it to become a rule that any submissions must identify the
sender or not be sent out on line. How many others feel the same way ?

It is all too easy to create a legitimate email address with a legitimate name. Kind of like I am doing right now given that I am not really Vic Nelson.

Some people like to maintain some degree of privacy. They may not want employers, ex-wives, neighbors, and stalkers peeking into their private lives via a simple Google search. So long as they are posting legitimate amphicar related topics, who cares what their real name is?

I will delete my alias, alter-ego account as soon as I post this. Just making a point.

Your point is made (although didn't you need the list owner's approval to
create your temporary account). We can all probably urinate in the reservoir
without getting caught by the ranger, but should we, just because we can get
away with it?

For those so needful of privacy, it just might have been a poor choice to
buy an Amphicar. Why should a social list be run as a masquerade ball just
because of one or two misguided souls who might have this need for privacy?
Wouldn't it just make more sense for those couple of people to just be
careful to not post personal information in a public list? And maybe they
should buy some less attention grabbing car, like a Ferrari.

I believe that this list has the capability to conduct a quick-vote, so Mike
Israel could set up a post with a link in it, where you could click the link
and then see a simple vote question like "Anonymity: Yes / No" You just
click again to vote, and later, Mike sets the list control parameters to the
will of the membership.

Democracy rears its ugly head to make its voice heard. Then, the list owner
gets to decide if he wants to listen. And that's the way it is in the land
of lists.

I do not physically approve each member. Nor do I intend to ask new members for
copy of a driver's license, birth certificate, or other proof if identify prior
to approval. New members are "moderated" in terms of their postings. Initial
(first) posts get approved, I do not try to verify every member although there
are other filters in place to block known spammers. Psuedo-Vic's post made a
good point in an amusing manner so I approved it.

In this case I will clearly state that I have no plans to take a vote on the issue. The list
remains open, at no cost, to anyone with an interest in Amphicars. If someone
prefers to use an alias such as bilgemaster, amphipoda, watercar, etc. that is
their choice. If another user would rather post their name, address, salary,
and SSN, that is also their choice. I am much more concerned about the nature
and quality of what gets posted than I am about who posts it. I will continue
to moderate off-topic discussions, personal attacks, etc.


The IAOC does not make it's member roster public. Likewise, I see no need for
this forum to require all of its members to share their identity if they choose
not to.

Using some other given name rather than a "handle" is tantamount to the same thing. In my case, I solicited some parts for my Centaur scooter on the mini-bike forum using my real name as directed by the moderator. Giving credit that my last name is uncommon and easier to research, a scam artist contacted me about those parts saying he was in Great Britain. It was a direct email contact probably deduced from searching my name further. I comment in various media and at public meetings about our local economy and his response came into my business mail, sometimes cited in the press. Obviously, he had taken my name, used google, and initiated a nebulous contact. - azpaul50

There are many reasons for a nick name on internet,,
I am out there TOO much, and it looks like it made it real hard for me to cross into USA at border
So now I just use my first name and Last initial and when ever I mention someone elses name I do the same, Everyone knows that needs to know when I say Vic N. and now it does not come up on a goggle of his full name.
Border crossings have got a bit better, we'll see what happens this week as I head for Boston Swim in.

Mike: Nice note.

On another note I have meant to call you to ask if our group e-mail
has an area to upload pictures, like a picture gallery? I am on a
Google group for our woodturner's club & you can go on line (in the
Goggle Group for our club) & post pictures. I would like to set up a
site for all of the Amphicar Club members to be able to post their
pictures from the various Swim-Ins that we all attend if there isn't
one set up already. (Maybe our club web site has this capability?)

What I'm talking about is only for Amphicar Club members so each
person that wants to be included would have to be approved. This is
different than an open e-mail list. Please give me your opinion &
others can certainly speak up. I have so many pictures that I'd like
to share with others & have no time to directly e-mail all of the
pictures to my Amphi friends. I think many of us also have numerous
pictures that can be shared.

Yes, there is an area to post photos that is used rather extensively. You can find it at:

Amphicar Photo Gallery

Likewise, you can attach photos to messages. The key is that you have to be logged on to attach them or view them. If you only view and post messages via the email bridge, you will not see them.

request. I just thought you still did that to protect the listmembers.

As I continually say, it's your personal list, and you get to run it as you
see fit, even to the extent of approving a hoax because you think it's an
amusing instruction.

Gosh Mr Israel, I was only asking people to ID their posts, so I don't see
why you should slug me with your comments about IAOC elections. But since
you mention it, I have always espoused a position of openness and
transparency in the IAOC governance. I think it's been a nice change from
the previous way. IAOC membership is at an all-time high, and local
activities are more robust than ever, so I think there's evidence that our
members agree. If there has been any controversy, it has originated from
those who do not like open voting.

In this case I will clearly state that I have no plans to take a vote on the
issue.

I see no need for this forum to require all of its members to share their

OK, and I will stop asking that members sign their posts. Fair is fair.
However, I will continue to sign my posts, as I think that's the right thing
to do.
