Hi Randy,

The unfortunate thing about the article is that the Amphicar he was
riding in wasn't in terriby good condtion. Even a stock Amphicar
should be able to maintain 70 MPH and it shouldn't wander on the road
if the tires are inflated correctly and the front end is aligned
properly. His noticing the bilge water spurting out also doesn't
represent an Amphicar that is in good shape. I've never run my bilge
pumps ever in three years of sailing (other than to test them) and
dry out the interiors with a few paper towels after hours of
sailing. Perhaps my cars are tighter than most but not all Amphicars
leak like that.

I've wondered about how best to do a front end alignment. Can an Amphi be put on an alignment machine? What numbers would the technician have to enter in order to do it? I'm pretty sure he/she wouldn't find the front end specs in the system. Is there anything more precise than the string or measuring stick method? I'm running Coker bias-ply tires, so I need all the precision I can get.

I guess it's a nice enough little article, with lots of the requisite errors
and omissions that one's come to expect.

Hi Randy,

I just took the Amphicar service manual to an alignment shop that was
familiar with old German cars and they didn't seem to have any
problem with it. As for the Coker Classics, I run them on one of my
Amphicars and it behaves perfectly, even on the freeways up past 80
MPH. (Yes, it has a big engine - check the photo seciton) No pull
or wandering. Just be sure to use the inflation setting that
Amphicar specifies. If you get the pressure in the fronts too much
above the specified 14 lbs. the car will tend to wander a bit at
highway speeds. Keep it at 14 and it's rock stable.
