Hmm, have I fixed it

Hi All,

Thanks for the feedback on my oscillating arms.

As I examined them closer I noticed that the washer on
the pinch bolt looked like it was around the nut
rather than behind it. I removed the nut and best I
can tell, whoever put it on last used a lock washer
rather than a regular one. As the bolt was tightened,
the lock washer simply opened up and went around the
nut.

Anyway, I replaced the washer with a Grade 5 regular
and tightened up the bolt. No specifice torque, more
like farmer torque which is to say a good bit.

Having done this there is no play at all in the axle.
What do you think? Am I good to go?

<font face="Arial" size="2">I doubt it but you might get away with it if it has only just become loose - you will know within a few miles of driving the car, the load in that area is huge so check if it becomes loose again. </font>

Hi Mike, After you get it completed be sure to paint it. Just squirt some black spray paint on itif nothing else. That is a very simple way to monitor if it is really completely tight. If it is tight it will not rust. But if it any loose it will move and it will rust around the edge of the axle. It is that simple if it any loose it will move and it will rust a little for sure. No rust means no movement and your safe. Car should be less of a "handful" to drive too. Later Tommy in Tampa</font>

Not only can you check the two bronze(?) bushings (which carry the weight of the car) for wear, you can also clean out all the old grease from inside the housing. My experience was that the old grease looked like a very stale chocolate brownie! BTW, filling that housing will take about a whole tube of Amsoil grease.</font></tt>

...speaking of the oscillating arms and proper assembly/disassembly...I
pulled mine out last week and planned on tightening up the tension using
those two nuts (4-20-23) at the inside end of the axel housing before going
back together. I don't have a wrench big enough to get on them...and
actually, I'd like to have one thin enough to get on one while locking the
other one. It looks like 1 3/8" but surely it's metric. Anyone know the
proper size? I'd like to buy a wrench, and want to get the right size
rather than guessing. Seems like a good tool for an Amphicar owner to have
in their tool box!
What does everybody use? I'd think a flat wrench and a socket would be in
order to lock them together.

<font face="Arial" size="2">I think it is about 40mm BUT all the commercial spanners - sorry wrenches - are too big, the jaws are too wide, and they are also very expensive and very hard so you don't really want to buy one and grind it down. It is better to make one out of a sheet of steel, about 5mm thick. You don't need a lot of force so it will be plenty strong enough and you can cut the jaws with a hacksaw -doesn't need to be milimetre accurate. I made mine from an old engine frontplate. </font>
