Ebay & Other Used Parts

Like many of us, I keep an eye on Ebay for AMphi parts
and stuff. I am frequently amazed at how much folks
will spend for a rusty bit that they could buy new
from Hugh for a few dollars more. On occassion some
great buys but generally better for sellers than
buyers.

Anyway, there is one thing I will get on my soap box
about and that is that owners should NEVER EVER be
buying 30 year old safety related equipment when new
is available. For example, anyone who reads this list
knows the importance of replacing those original oil
cooler lines which have been known to burst and cause
engine fires. Still, I see people buying and selling
used oil cooler lines on Ebay (unethical seller and
foolish buyers). Is the $10 you save really worth
risking loss of a $25,000 Amphicar? Bilge pumps are
another item. The original bilge pump is a piece of
junk best replaced with a Jabsco or other modern unit.
Save money where it makes sense but not at the cost
of your own safety.

Mike,

I completly agree! I have my original bilge pump installed, but it is
not hooked up ... sort of. To make it look like it is working, I
installed an automatic Rule pump in place of the original pickup
screen and plumbed it through the original pump after removing the
impellor. Looks original with the reliability of a new hi cap pump.

So you can have both original looks and safety too!
