Well it turns out I have an original Amphicar ignition switch and a key from
Gordons worked perfectly in it and the glove box. However my door lock cylinder
has been changed. Does anyone out there have a door lock cylinder of the 55
series that I could rekey to match my ignition and glove box looks? My current
door look is a 54 series and can't be rekeyed to the same key as my ignitions
switch. I also need a push botton for the passanger door. Mine works but looks
like someone ran it down a guard rail...

Craig,

My White car came with all matching locks (type 55) and they all
worked correctly. My Red car needed an original ignition switch. I
was able get one (type 54) from Mike Echemann. The door handles had
been rechromed and they had rechromed the button/lock too. That
destroyed the drivers door lock. The only way I was able to get one
of those was to buy an entire NOS handle set from Mike. He also was
able to find a type 54 glove box lock. I had the door lock and glove
box lock recoded to match the ignition lock. A local lock shop only
charged me $22 to rekey both of them and even included a couple of
keys. I got what I wanted, all the locks work and match. A minor
benefit of having the two different lock series, it's easy to tell one
cars keys from the other.

Re: Re: Door lock cylinder...

My car has a lock on the drivers door and just a push button on the passenger
side. I assume that the water lock is supposed to serve as the passenger door
lock. Is this standard or do some Amphicars come with a passenger door lock?

Craig,
The passenger door can be locked from the inside by pushing the inside door
handle into a lock position. Push the handle in the opposite direction that
you would to open the door, and it will be locked. No need to use the water
latch. I don't actually remember ever learning this....but I think
Elizabeth just figured it out one day. She locks the door almost every time
she gets in.

Marc Schlemmer.

Craig,

To lock the passenger's door, just push the door handle (not water
lock) down. Up opens, down locks.

Your CD left Friday.

Thanks both John and Marc! I had no idea the passanger door locked that way! :-)
