I had some help with my Amphi from a Triumph buff,, He said I could go with a
dual carb setup to increase my power. Does anyone have the dual carb set up on
their Amphicar,,If so how does it work?? I've been told you can get 60+
Horsepower from this setup,,

Re: RE: carbs

Gord:
If you say so it's ok with me. I'm not sure how you can make the statement
not knowing where I found them. I'm getting them from a collector. I
really don't have "suppliers" since I'm not in the business as you are. I
just hobby for the fun of it.

There are quite few units out there which look pretty much the same. Make
sure you know your tag codes for these carbs if you want the best ones.

Chicago it cold enough. 20 below is even worse.

Long story:

I was VW guy in the 70's. Loved the simple Solex carb and electric
choke.

Gotta Amphi. Tore the Solex carb apart and literally crapped. I've
never seen a more complicated carb in my life. I am familiar with
carbs. From pressuized aircraft carbs to Holleys. The Amphi carb is a
good door stop. Works well as installed now.

As much as I like manual chokes, the elements of an Amphi suggest
different.

Has anyone tried a Solex carb off a VW with an electric choke? The
choke wire goes to the hot side of the coil. Very simple.

The adjustment of the VW choke was easy. Twice a year I'd have to
adjust it for cold weather vs warm. I only drive the Amphi in the
warm so adjustments may never have to be made.

Side note:

I put Gorgons exhaust on my Amphi and ignored the instructions. I'm
sorry. They were crap. I was hoping for a quieter Amphi. That was
not the case. Still a good choice compared to the bullet ridden
muffler I took off.

I had my machine shop enlarge the manifold exhaust port(the new
exhaust is a 1/4" larger) on my manifold and by mistake they opened
the intake. So my next idea is to find a VW carb with a similar
throat.

My best guess is that our Triuhmp Herald engine is strangled to
death. No one has the exhaust manifold gaskets because Triumph never
made 1" 1/4 exhaust. Gordon didn't have gaskets for the new exhaust
that went from 1 1/4 to 1 1/2. I ordered from a British company not
knowing the difference and they sent me 1 3/4" eaxhuast gaskets
(manifold to pipe). Ended up making my own gasket. The stock motor
had 1 3/4" pipes?? My word! That's a lot of volume for 1477 cc's.

Queston again:

Has anyone tried a larger throat VW Solex carb with an electric throat
on an Amphi? Other than the rigging, this set uo seems like a 'no
brainer'. Even a smaller throat carb from an earlier and smaller VW
has to preform better.

I love this car but something got f--ked up between the Germans and
the Brits.

Yep, been there, I did it while trying to solve the ole vapor lock problem of it boiling fuel in carb after stopping. Once you get it running well enough to use, you too will have the pleasure of that little trait. The VW carb worked well enough but you will need an adapter, cause the holes for mounting studs are not the same. I contributed to my vapor lock problem by taking off the j tube under intake manifold, so don't do that, make sure its clear and the little hole in manifold is open, a welding torch tip cleaner and blowing it out with air works. I put a 1/2 inch insulating plate instead of the 1/4 inch under carb and made a stainless steel heat shield between carb and manifold, which has all helped, at least now I don't have to wait an hour for it to cool down when I stop for gas.

Am in the process of putting a Weber DGV carb on but had to make both manifolds which, if it works should be a lot better---better carb, plus separate manifolds to keep heat off the intake system, but on the down side, it won't be original, so I can't sell it at an auction for $124,000, but that's OK cause its not for sail. </font>

I did have vapor lock problems with my VW on occassion, but only at altitude going over mountain passes. Good info. Thanks.
