A new member, "bcde124" has just spammed the list with his first and last
post. This is a fine example of poor filtering of membership. Why even
bother with making this a "members-only" group if a member as phony sounding
as "bcde124" is allowed in?

One of the reasons that a list has closed membership is to prevent spammers
from harvesting the membership data, but if any anonymous fool can get
validated, then harvesting of your personal information is almost a done
deal.

My opinion is that this slipshod validation starts with the attitude that
anonymous "handles" are acceptable within this community. My opinion is that
everyone using this list should be immediately recognizable by their email
address or sig file. Members of this list are supposed to be members of the
Amphicar community, and there is no justification for anonymity here.

The only reason a poster would want anonymity is if they didn't want what
they posted to be associated with their name. Anonymous "handles" lead to a
general decline in the civility of the list.

You wouldn't extend any courtesy to someone who knocked on your door while
wearing a ski mask! So why tolerate anonymity here?

This week I received a very good mock-up that looked like it was from a
friend stuck far away with a stolen wallet and passport - and could I help?
Pretty familiar and unbelievable, but the stationary, markings and return
address looked just right. The poor writing style and sloppy punctuation
(not that of my poet and former tech-writer friend) gave it away. That's
easy for people to see, but beyond the abilities of a spam filter.



This is an endless series of defenses and attacks, gambits and
countermeasures. Even the best walls are breached and new protection must be
devised. The thing is, the defenders set up automated programs (robots) and
the attackers hackers (human) innovate around any barrier and the cycle
starts again.



I'd sure enjoy pouring a Pepsi into the prick's PC though...

Just for you.

Actually there are hundreds (yes hundreds) of spammer accounts that try to get on-line here EVERY day. There are actually several layers intended to thwart them. Some use names, some use ip addresses, others use posting policies. Despite all this, indeed one slips through every few months or so. The other side of the coin, is that I often have to manually intervene on behalf of legitimate users who have difficulty gaining access due to the spam filters.

Below is a list of accounts that tried to get to the list is just ONE day. This represents those thwarted by just one of the layers. If you think you can do a better job, you are welcome to take on the moderation role and personally validate every account that gets created here. It will be a great opportunity for you to become a problem solver rather than a problem identifier.

I agree with Ed's comments about signing your posts. As a long-time owner and restorer of multiple Amphicars there are occasions when I can offer advice or tips. However, I simply ignore anonymous requests. Personally, I like to know who I'm talking to.

The only concern is that certain forum formats allow google to look into (and cache) the individual posts. I don't think the Amphicar format does but I've found others do (starting only recently). The problem isn't so much in what a person says, it is the situation where someone searching a name could literally come up with 100's of entries giving full knowledge of a person's interests. I recently joined a long-standing mini-bike forum (with a well-used forum template) that insists on full names and my posts now come up on google. - azpaul50
