Bumper Crop of Bumpers

In March I decided that the world needed some new Amphicar front
bumpers. Since my family has connections to two machine shops how
hard could it be?

After a lot of hard work I got a few done two weeks ago. The design for
the die to use in stamping the things was critical. The complete die
weighs about 1000 lbs and consists of steel plates one and two inches
thick. The pieces are nicely stamped, trimmed, polished and then triple
plated. I have had some VW type bumper bolts modified to fit the Amphi
bumper holes. Also some 8mm /14mm nuts were made and zinc plated to go
with the bolts.

I certainly would appreciate some support from any of you who need
bumpers. When I showed my bumpers to Hugh Gordon two weeks ago he said
he was about to start work on his. Timming?

The price will be $260 each for the two piece and $560 for the one
piece. I wouldn?t mind getting some of my tooling costs back.
Shipping has been running about $15.

Glad to hear people are getting into the Amphicar parts manufacturing
business. I know Hugh has a few original one piece front bumpers left that
he's had beautifully rechromed. The price is a bit up there but, hey, they're
originals. My one piece front bumper was really trashed. It was bend up in
the middle, twisted, creased, dented, and rusted. It's amazing what the chrome
shop did with this thing. What I got back was a beautiful like new bumper - at
the tune of $585, but what an improvement! There is some value in knowing that
it's an original Amphicar part, especially one that shows off the car so
nicely.

BTW, for the mounting bolts I used 5/16 x 3/4 inch stainless steel carriage
bolts and filed off three of the four points under the head. They fit
perfectly in that German style single notch in the bumper holes and the
stainless steel looks almost like chrome, especially if you buff them up.

For those really needing a new bumper, this reproduction sounds like the way to
go. Thanks Allen. I'll be needing one of those eventually for another car.
