There is a white/red 1964 Amphicar for $35,900 with a picture that I can't figure out. It has something mounted below rear bumper. Can anybody tell me what it is?
Thanks,
Ted

Yep it's a tow hitch. Look at pic #3, there is a hole for the ball hitch in the middle of the arch. Amphigr66n.

Does anyone in the club has first-hand knowledge about this car? Condition? I might be interested. Please advise. - AZPaul 50

AZPaul,

I live about 40 miles from Rochester Minnesota where the car is located. I don't have any first hand knowledge but I need to go to the Mayo to visit a friend in the next few days anyway. I could possibly inspect her and drive her for you. I could even store her for you at a secure location if needed. So...how interested are you?

Brian - I'm vacillating on this car but interested enough to compensate you for checking it out for me. $100? As you might know, I bought one 10 months ago that was badly below what it was represented to be. Despite putting more money into it, I'm still with a car that runs and floats but need substantial body and electrical work to be "presentable" and safe. After speaking to a few restorers, my cost would be $20K to $25K (more) just to end up with something in "fair" condition. Those figures wouldn't include transportation costs either. So, here I see this white/red car at $36K. My thought is that should this car run and float at a reasonable level, I could buy it and later sell my present car for what is truly worth (I think $20K to $25K or so "as is"). The benefit to me is to soon have a presentable car rather than wait a year or longer to get mine redone. So, with that background, would like like to report on the condition of the one up there? - Paul

Paul,

I can check it out for you tomorrow or Wednesday. I spoke to the seller, Bob who is not the owner. He sounded pretty flexible for a visit and was ok with taking her for a spin. Ideally, I would like to get her in a lake. Unfortunately, the weather here has turned for the worst. Possibly 12'' of the white stuff will accumulate starting tomorrow. Southern Minnesota, where I live may get a snow/rain mix but none the less could put a damper on driving her. I wouldn't make any sort of suggestion to you without going for a drive. I'll check out all systems, listen for out of place noises, run a cloth covered magnet on the panels looking for bondo and get her up to land speed to see how she tracks, etc...

I'll let you know what I come up with. By the way, thanks for the inspection fee offer but your money does not fit in my wallet.

Brian - I really appreciate your kindness. I'm not looking for perfection but something better than the semi-submersible I currently have. - Paul

the tow hitch makes this all the more intriguing. I occasionally tow a teardrop trailer behind my Met with no problem. Jeez... the trailer paint even matched this car's colors! Hmmmmm.

One of the German tow hitch manufacturers made a tow hitch for the Amphicar. Popular in Germany I think the only one in the US is on Paul Rasmussens car.
