Amphicar 4 sail

Whoops! Thought I posted that last message to a Mexican User
Group. Sorry about that. However, if you travel to Mexico, you may
want to think about my last posting about cell phones.

Well, the rubber has hit the road, or water, whatever the case may
be. I have had a long term goal to retire to Mexico and sell my
Amphi prior to the move in a few years. Then something unexpected
happened. My wife was granted her Mexican citizenship during our
last visit. We're going back down in March to close on some
properties we purchased and the move south should follow soon
thereafter. We need take care of selling our personal and real
property back home.

I had planned to put the Amphi on E-Bay after a good waxing and
photo shoot. Needs to warm up a bit 1st. I've owned it 4 years and
just got it seaworthy last spring. Put about 35 hours on it and
over 100 passenger rides roaming a local lake, a local canal, and
the Willamette River.

It looks , drives and floats great. I'm the third owner. It was
purchased new in Portland and has lived in Hillsboro (15 miles West
of Portland)it's entire life. The first owner had it 20 years. The
second owner had it 20 years. And I had hoped to have it that long,
too, but that warm Mexican salt water would return this car back to
her elements in a very short time. I would never do that to this
car.

It's not a cherry by any imagination. But it's very straight and
solid despite the common areas of rust. I have one leak I hope to
trace down before the sail which is near the rear bumper attach
point. Pretty common area for leaks. I cycle the bilge pump about
every 15 minutes for a few seconds after being in the water for
about a half hour.

Look for it soon. The last one I saw on E-Bay didn't run and had
fiberglass patches on the hull and it went for nearly 30 grand. I
hope to do a little better than that.

Well, I figured it was premature of me (hear that from the wife,
too) to mention that my Amphi was going to E-Bay sometime soon.
I've been clobbered with e-mails from folks wnating to buy it now.
However, I felt that the Mexican cell phone post I accidently posted
need some 'splaining'.

Fact is, the car isn't ready and I'm not ready. I was just asked to
come back to a Spring picnic to give rides. My wife works for a
local non-profit and last July they had a company picnic out on Hagg
Lake right next to the most beautiful boat ramp with docks
imaginable. I figured this day was as good as any for my first sea
trials. Lotsa people to help carry out the sinking ship so to
speak. Well, I arrived early the morning of the picnic. Popped out
the back seat, opened the trunk lids and backed into the water. The
only sign of serious water was from the doors and a small leak in
back which plagues me to this day. Ran it out of the water, closed
the lids, tossed the seat in, donned the life vests and gave rides
from 8:30am to 6:30pm. Took a 30 minute lunch break. I averaged 3
rides/hr. giving out nearly 90 rides my first day on the water.
The docks were busy all day launching and retrieving boats on both
sides of the ramp, but there was always enough room for the Amphi to
go right down the center. The local police patrol, who meet their
quotas writing boat speeding violations, pulled me over and wanted
to cite me for having the most fun on the lake. Anyway, it's an
invitation I can't turn down. Good people. Free food. Good fun.

More fun. The US Coast Guard sent a river boat off their cutter on
the Willamette River to greet me. Seems like I cruised past the
Cutter before anyone could get out to inspect the Amphi. Now I have
to make the effort to pull up to the docked cutter and honk each
time I go out on the Willamette.

And, I really want to find that leak in the back. And, I'd really
like to install the new set of axles, bearings and seals that are
sitting on my work bench. And, if time permits, I'd like to install
a new top and maybe replace the interior. All or none of that may
happen before I put it up for sail. I really want to find that leak
though. Fix that and the only leak I'll have is when I get hammered
by a big wake and soaks everybody when the top and windows are down
which is ALWAYS! Getting wet if half the fun! Oh yeah, I may have to
replace the windshield wiper motor. Having wipers on the water
would be helpful. They're good to have on the road, too. Okay,
I'll ad that to the list.

Bottom line: It will be late July at the earliest before the Amphi
goes on the auction block. So pla-eeeeeeeeeeez , no more e-mails
until then. I'll let the group know when that happens.

Si', but to get to any fresh water lakes or navigatable rivers I'd have to drive 4 hours. That's 2.5 hours if you have a car that cruises at 70 and can pass at 100 like they drive down there. Plus your car needs to round curves at3 timesthe posted limit which would roll a normal Amphi. No thank you. Where I'm going there's small trout streams which have class 4 rapids in the rainy seasonor salt water. I'm living on the salt and that's where the car would drive.

I am thinking of the Dutton but it's just not the same. A kit car is a kit car regardless of it being a Cobra, or Camaro, or one of those Amphi Jeep thingys, or what. Kit cars are not classic, period. It's like kit airplanes. Everyone can get one. You pull out of the ocean and drive up to a taco stand in Mexico in an Amphicar and someone will notice. But you will only do it for a very limited of time.

I remember a classic antique seaplane of years gone by. Forget the name right now. Only one flying in the CA area and parts of two more up here. It was all stainless that was spot welded together. No rivits. Down right F'n beautiful. It was called the Fleetwing I believe. Pulled by a radial. Orgasmic.

Give me a stainless Amphi and there'd be fewer problems.

Any comments on the Dutton? Anyone? To me it's the lowest common denominator. I know nothing of it's performance. Can't be any better than what I have now other than the glass hull. I like the idea about having 4wd on those beaches.

There may be fresh water in Mexico lah20car (what the @@@@ is that? french?) but I'm not gonna drink it.
