How could I be so stupid? I set out to replace the broken
emergency brake cable in my Amphicar. While parked in the garage, I
jacked up the driver's side of the car and began dis-assembling the rear
hub and interior seats. Everything was going fine until I happened to
notice I had jacked up the car against a support beam for the house. I
bent in the body just behind the passenger door. The dent is about 1"
deep, 3-4 inches across and about 6-7 inches down. Luckily the side
bumper guard hit the support beam instead of hitting directly on the
paint. The paint was not cracked. After calming down, I reasoned that
maybe I could hammer the dent out without cracking the paint. I removed
the interior paneling. I rapped the end of a 2X4 with a cloth and
pressed it against the dent. After a few taps with a hammer 95% of the
dent came out. I took 2 more hours trying to work out the last 5%. All
in all it looks pretty good. Of course I can still see the dent. The
emergency brake still needs repair. In review this is my normal pattern
when working on the car. One step forward, two steps backwards.
