perfect amphicars

I have suggested in the past to have "survivor cars" or accurately
restored Amphicars detailed and pictured at Celina. That way when a
"perfect restored" car comes up for sale, a buyer can have the knowledge
to see and know what is not original. My Brother still makes fun of Me
using the word "restofication". Or restoring while modifying. But to say
perfectly restored on a vehicle that is modified is wrong. So maybe as
a tech session The Club can inspect and rate some cars. Perhaps at
registration a person could sign up if he or she wants thier car
inspected. Perhaps as a fund raiser. Some one may want to bring thier
car up to a FACTORY restored condition. Later Dave the Wave

Having photos, on the club web site perhaps, would be a GREAT idea
and be a major help to those new to Amphicars (like me) and to those
doing "restofications" (like me). I'd be happy to volunteer my time
to make that happen. I can do the web work and the photos. I just
don't have a perfect car to photograph.

I'd say lets not go as far as judging/inspection though... that
starts to cross a line of "mine is better than yours" and one of the
things I think is so cool about Amphicars is that it seems the
majority of them get used. Leave whose is better in the eye of the
beholder.

I agree, Amphi's are too much fun to do the judging thing at our events.
Somehow I think it would take the fun out of things. At non Amphicar car
shows no one knows anyway what their looking at. I do agree that someday
buyers will want to distinguish the right from the wrong. This usually
happens when the prices get up there which has certainly happened with the
Amphicar. With Amphicars being such a unique automobile even price hasn't
seemed to demand this yet. It certainly would put a premium on correct cars
and original parts however if it ever does. Hmmm, a Bloomington (err,
Celina) Gold Amphicar.

I've been involved in gathering info and creating the "right from wrong"
manual before and it's not much fun and is a pretty serious task. Your
talking about nuts, clips, wire colors and bolts here too and not just
emblems and color shades. Were lucky to have so many parts sources with
Gordon adding to his offerings all the time etc. This keeps all our cars
running and in tip top shape. For someone to get "original' however at a
high point you would need to find an original car or have a nice supply of
nos parts.

I think Amphicars are the luckiest breed of car on the planet. Where would
we have been without the Gordons supplying all those parts over the years or
guys like Dave the Wave and others going quality resto's and repairs. A 100
point car is something else. I guess I just don't like judging shows.

I've got two such cars however and anyone who wants to visit, inspect,
photograph, ask questions etc. is welcome anytime.

Happy New Years to all,
Mike

Well, you guys have just stepped on my webbed toes! :) I have been
working on this project for quite a while now. I have a survivor car
here that I have been taking photos of. Once I get it back out of
storage this spring, I will be able to complete that task. I have a
stack of photos from another 600 mile car as well to add. I would
guess there will be several hundred photos in the final library out of
the 1000+ I will be taking. This a HUGE undertaking, so it will take
some time.

There are more big surprises in store to! (IE: Interactive
electricals) I have had plans on making the Amphicar the best
documented marque I can possibly make it. Of course it will only be
avaiable to members, so I strongly suggest you keep that membership
current!

I have to keep the behind the scenes stuff fairly simple so that it
does not get too complicated for an average person to decipher when I
am no longer doing the website. No, I'm not leaving any time soon as
far as I know, so not to worry!

It would certainly be great to have some of the remaining NOS Amphicars present in Celina to serve as museum type reference pieces. I imagine the owners might not want to swim them but maybe the club could subsidize having them brought to Celina for display. Would probably need to be displayed indoors as well, maybe where some of the tech sessions have been held.

I am indifferent about the judging thing, seems like many Amphi owners do not like such an idea. However, a slight variation of that might be to have some sort of "Originality Certification" inspection offering where owners could be offered a report regarding how closely their car matches what would have come from the factory. No 1st, 2nd, 3rd prizes but maybe certification levels of some sort where Gold represents a car as it would have beenthe dayit rolled off the assembly line.

The most original and best document Amphicar I know of (note the
caveat there guys) in Rogers Sallee's Radio station car. Although
even it was repainted if i recall. I'd be happy to do detailed and
complete photos of it or any car in the chicago area. I have a
rather large collection of photos done ver the years. But none are
as comprehensive as this would require.
