The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is the state agency
responsible for registering boats. I contacted them (via email) for
advice on registering my Amphicar. Their unsettling response:
"What's an Amphicar?" I see a major education campaign ahead.

Randy,

Don't give them too much info! Just say you have a steel hulled, 14',
inboard, gas powered boat. Don't mention anything about the wheels.
This should make it easier on you.

It was easier here (Colorado) to register her for the water than as a
car. They (Parks/Rec) only cared if I could write a check for $18.50.
The only questions were the fuel type, hull construction and overall
length. Getting the automobile title replaced (Victor, the previous
owner lost it) was expensive and time consuming. It cost me $300 and
took 4+ months!

John has the right idea. I was just wondering who gave
me that good advice when I first registered mine and
I'm guessing it was John after seeing this post.
Don't know if Maryland is anything like Michigan but I
did exactly as John said and had no problems. My
experience has been that most government agencies
don't want any extra work so if you guide them in the
right direction within their rules/forms, it goes much
smoother. Those three things- length, hull
construction and fuel type were right on the Michigan
registration so I went up to the counter with them
filled in and they didn't care what the vessel was
called. I'll bet if I hadn't there would have been a
lot of questions, maybe calls to supervisors and maybe
a return trip.

The Cap'n's right on the money, as usual: DO resist any urges to give the
hassle merchants anything to get interested in. It's a boat...that's
all...just another 14 foot steel-hulled boat with a gasoline-powered inboard
motor. You didn't build it yourself, and sure it conforms to all Coast
Guard regulations for safety equipment and standards. Just in case they
should ask (or you have find a suitable blank on the form): In the water
your boat's rated horsepower at the props is precisely 9.6 hp @ 3,500 rpm
(SAE), exactly as is stated at
<http://www.amphicar.com/WaterHorsepowerStatement.htm>. (This horsepower
fact may serve you well later on in gaining entree into bodies of water that
prohibit any watercraft over 10 hp, such as that beautiful Occoquan River,
just down the road from you).

Never volunteer that your "watercraft" has wheels. I mean, don't lie and
say it doesn't, but just don't get overly friendly and forthcoming about
either. I know you're probably feeling pretty giddy, but remember: These are
NOT your friends. Be pleasant, but never forget for even a second that
before you are a ravenous pack of tax-fattened weasels who'll gleefully
waste your time and money with multiple jumpings through of essentially
unnecessary hoops, just because they won't know what else to do if you start
any sparking in their long dormant, whiteout-addled neurons. Being what
they are, they'll feel they have to think of SOMEthing, and then before you
know it, you'll be peeling off greenbacks to some "State certified
watercraft engineering expert" named Earle, who wouldn't know an Amphicar
from an amoeba, to smear his condiment-stains over Form MD-5467-LSMFT, which
you'll naturally have to drive to Annapolis to get after paying the "dummy
tax." Get it?

Too Late!! Being the PROUD owner of an Amphicar, I was all too willing to
tell them it was an amphibious vehicle. I even directed them to
www.amphicar.com. Oh no...they'll go after all of us. I haven't heard
back from them yet.

California also has a provision in the Motor Vehicle Code to specifically cover
amphibious vehicles. The Cal DMV handles both boats & cars, and you simply
register under the correct ID code for an amphibious vehicle. Search the post
files, as this exact topic was covered in detail around 11 months ago.

To Randy in MD
I had a similar problem here in FL - the agency insisted I could not
have the same VIN for a boat and a car, though the previous Florida owner had
had it properly registered. Without my knowing it, they finally took the easy
way out and dug up somebody's name (not mine) and provided me with a boat
registration for the year 2000. (I had first tried to register it in 1997).
When I went to reregister it in 2001, things got really wierd. I then got the
VIN numbers and current license numbers of two other Amphi owners in Florida
with theirs properly registered and armed with that and a sympathetic clerk,
managed to get the thing back on course after a 2 year hiatus with the
improper 2000 registration showing. My advice is to find the VIN numbers and
license numbers of a couple of other properly registerd MD Ampicars and go
from there. See what they say when you show them others have them
appropriately registered. Victor "Splash" Nelson

Re: Re: Maryland Boat Registration

Re: MD Amphicar registration. I am wondering if MD and Michigan and CO are
different than here in FL. Here, the Automobile and Boat Registrations are
handled by the same clerks. Maybe if I had gone on two separate occasions and
tried to just do one or the other (car or boat) at a time, it might have
sailed through. Who knows. Victor "Splash" Nelson

Re: Re: Maryland Boat Registration

Thanks, Victor. It is handled by two different offices. Despite my
inquiry to their office earlier, I think I'll just send in the completed
form and see if it gets processed.
