Fuel reserve?

I have heard that there is a reserve although I have never experimented with
it. I also have heard that many early cars the lever would interfere with the
gas peddle so the shut off was repositioned 180 degrees. So if that is the
case I do not know which way is which. I always leave mine where it is.

With Tommy in mind I had thought that the Amphi has a reserve much
like a motorcycle. In the book it states "12.5 gal with 2.5 reserve".
I could not find any definitive answer to which position the fuel
shut off handle is in for the 3 choices? I think Reserve is @ 9:00,
On @ 6:00 and off @ 3:00. Anybody know for certain?

I remember this question coming up before, and I can never remember which is
the correct direction for the handle....so I checked the archives, and found
my post from almost two years ago about it.
(I'm glad those archives are there....it helps me remember what I once
knew!)

In any case, since then, I've heard a lot of people say that once you start
moving the lever, the whole works is likely to leak. I think that may be
good advice, and I haven't messed with mine since!

I've seen these operate differently....but mine is positioned straight down
for normal use. Turned 90? toward the driver is gas flow in reserve mode.
90? toward the passenger is OFF.
The purpose of the reserve is so that if you are in the middle of the lake
and run out of gas, you really aren't out of gas....simply turn toward the
driver (who most likely is to blame for running out of gas in the first
place) and you are running on another gallon or so of gas. This is
accomplished by having two gas outlets out of the fuel tap up into the
tank - one is slightly longer and thus starts sucking air sooner than the
shorter (reserve) outlet.
I've used it a couple of times....once I purposely ran it out of gas to
figure out which position did what....and another was up in Celina this past
summer during the Poker Run on Sunday afternoon. Doug Parsons and Al Heath
left me in the dust as I coasted out of gas to the side of the road. A
simple flip of the lever, and some long cranking to pump the gas back to the
engine and I was on the road again!

I bought all the parts to rebuild my fuel reserve shutoff , and it leaked
(Gordons sold all but one part,,the one I needed most )so I bought a new one
from Gordons back in 98,,I have the lever at 3 for OFF , 6 for ON and 9 for
reserve. Ive had no problems with it at all (more leaking carb problems, than
anything ), It assures me that the gas is really OFF when I park the Amphi,,Russ

We use ours all of the time, to keep the gaskets
loose, and your orientation thoughts are correct,
John.

The pickup tubes are about 3/4" difference in length .
. . . multiplied by the area of the tank at that depth
. . . . Yeah, I guess 2-1/2 gallons is about right!

(like I really could do the math)
