Can anyone help me?

Hi All Amphicar lovers! I am new to the site....reason being is that I am hoping
that someone can guide me or give me some information on how to find a specific
amphicar.
This photo was taken in August of 1968. The owner of the car at the time was
Joseph Frederick.
My mom recently presented me and my brother with this photo at a recent reunion.
We have never seen it before and we really would like to have our photo taken
in front of the same car all these years later! (My brother lives in Washington
State and me in New York so you can imagine how special it would be for us).
If anyone could help me it would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Thank-you,
Christine

Hello Christine
If you can find out what state the photo was taken in, you might be able to
call the D.M.V
in that state to see if the same owner still owns the Amphi or they might be
able to put
you in touch with him to see what he did with it.Good Luck and keep us
posted on how
make out? YOUR AMPHI FRIEND
PAUL FROM ALBANY 67 AMPHI STILL
IN THE MAKING.

Chris,

I've checked the various Membership rosters of the former Amphicar Club of the
1970s and 80s as published in its Newsletters (available in the current Club
website's password-accessible "Members Only Area"), but there is no listing for
any Joseph Frederick.

What you would really need to first find out is the car's VIN (Vehicle
Identification Number) to try to determine if it may be owned by someone
nowadays. There's probably about a one in three chance that the particular
Amphicar you are seeking has survived through the decades since you last saw
it...which are actually pretty good odds compared with other vehicle marques, I
suppose. You could then compare that VIN with the current Club membership and
other listings where VINs are given to find its current owner. If you know
where the car was registered, you might try contacting that state's Department
of Motor Vehicles to see if their records go back that far. Alternatively, it
would seem likely in that period of the late 60s that Mr. Frederick would have
purchased his parts and so on from a now-defunct outfit called Ranchero Motors,
which bought out the remains of the original Amphicar Corporation of America.
You might therefore try contacting Gordon Imports (see
http://www.amphicar.com/ads.htm for contact info) to see if they may have some
of the old Ranchero Motors records and be willing to search for Mr. Frederick's
Amphicar in them (though you do understand that depending on how these records
may be organized...or not...that it might be asking quite a lot of research of
someone to basically satisfy one's "caprice", right?).

In the event that this particular Amphi may not have weathered the intervening
decades, or as a far easier expedient, you might simply consider finding someone
in the Club nearby with an Amphicar who is willing to let you take a snapshot in
front of it. That shouldn't be hard. Just go to one of the events listed in the
Club's Events Calendar at http://www.amphicar.com/calendar.htm )

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. Bill. I do have a partial vin # on the car and also part of
the license plate #. I'll try the D.M.V. first and take it from there. Thanks a
million!
