A few days ago John Friese mentioned a little-known code in the vast
California DMV system that is used to register Amphicars in this
state, and wondered whether the code was created specifically for our
cars. Through some experience with DMV on a related issue, I can say
it was not. The code in question is used for any vehicle which
carries dual registration. There's really only one type of vehicle
that qualifies, and that is an enduro motorcycle. These types of
bikes carry both a street license, and an off-road license. Hence the
need for the code.
When I first tried to register my car, when the DMV finally figured
out which code to use, their computers kept spitting back that my car
was really a motorcycle. You never saw so many perplexed faces as
those at the DMV that day!
