Phantom vacuum tube on manifold

There is a vacuum tube coming off the intake manifold. I see no logical
connection for it. The vacuum advance for the distributor goes to the
carburetor. Is this an auxiliary vacuum source?

Do you mean the fuel drain pipe? That's important to treat right, looks like
brake pipe and comes down in a large J shape. I've pasted below what the worlds
leading Triumph Herald expert (that is no exageration) said when asked by a
Herald owner what it does. On the Herald it's straight but on Amphicar it's J
shape is so the fuel evaporates.

The hole is at the low point of the inlet manifold, and until the exhaust
heats up the inlet manifold fuel condenses on the inside and is designed to
run out onto the road via the pipe. Blanking the hole off will mean the mixture
will be
made richer as effectively the hole weakens it off so it may mean you use
more fuel rather than less! Herald 1200s can be quite economical provided
both the vacuum and centrifugal advance in the distributor are working and
the timing is set correctly. When the hole in the pulley is lined up with
the pointer on the timing cover it is top dead centre and not the timing
mark, the points should open 15 degrees before the marks align, which is
something like 1 cm. Also check the engine has short reach plugs and the
polarity is correct.

Yes, that's the pipe. I actually taped it off, thinking I was losing
vacuum. Guess I'll let it breathe.

thanks much.
