Wheel Spacers

My car has a steel spacer ring on each front wheel. The spacer ring is
something like a 3/16 or 1/4 inch thick ring that goes over the lugs between the
brake drum and the wheel.

Do these spacers belong on the front wheels?

Should they also be on the rear wheels?

If they do belong, what are they for?

Thanks

Roger:
I believe they were factory. You don't find them often and I"m not 100% sure.
I've seen them before and they were probably used to keep the tires from rubbing
the shocks on hard turns. I think Hugh Gordons knows the answers regarding when
and why they were used.

I've had some rather hard lock-to-lock turns while
towing Amphi & sure 'nough, there is some light
polishing on the front shock springs and corresponding
shine on the inside of the front tires. No spacers on
Amphi, Roger.

I just today test drove and swam her after the
installation of the steering damper I asked about a
while back. Ended up using a 10mm rod end screwed
onto the pass side steering-stop bolt threads, VW
damper, and a simple welded bracket with a couple of
U-bolts over the tierod.

Not so much wander on the road, but transparent to
normal turns and handling. Hopefully it will resolve
the occasional lock-to-lock/tracking issues when
towing. Too bad there is no camber adjustment.

Hello Larry,
Did you happen to snap a picture or two of your damper installation?
I, for one, would like to see it.

Re: Re: Wheel spacers

My new "simplied" lifestyle (read that as
"garage-free") means that I used a jack and stands
then laid on the rocks out front. I tried a picture
while under there, but it was too close to focus.
I'll try again when I can get on a rack, John, or will
sketch something up for you, if you want.

They sell spacers at Pep Boys and in JCWhitney. You will find them at all
high performance shops. You probably know the stock ones are 1/4" thick but I
always thought 1/2" thick ones would work better.
