What material are restorers using between quarter panels and 7" long horizontal bars

Hello, I am in the process of putting rear quarters ( due to the fins being removed by a previous owner) on my Amphi and the 7" long horizontal metal bars behind them and wonder what I should use as the cushion between the 2? It looks like the original material is a fuzzy material like scotch brite. I want to use something that wont hold moisture and rust the new metal again! Any ideas? Thanks, Jack in Mass.

I just posted a long reply, signed my name and poof, lost it all.
try again!!!
I have those metal braces with me in Fl. Also may have some at Rons in NH.
Do not use porus matertial betweebn brace and fenders,
I( use Fiibreglas strips 1/16 thick, there the cut offs from my fibreglass rear Quaters as I useually make then 2 or 3 inches higher than needed.
Thish photo shows this would be a perfect car for my complete rear fenders,
I do have at home inner fins NOS, but I think only for Right side.
GORD SOUTERS AMPHICARS. Parts, repairs interiors and Fibreglass panels.

The best thing you can use is called "DumDum" it comes in a rope form. It's a somewhat sticky non-pourus caulking used for automotive applications. It won't rust the panel and provides both sealing for the screws in the waist molding and anti-vibration for the panels as originally intended.

I ended up using urethane rope for the installation of windshields thats been on my shelf for a few years. It is a real tough material that should last forever, is a little thicker than dum-dum, does'nt tear easily but compressed easily to conform to the spacing between 1/4 and brace. My quarters and door skins are now on and ready for bodywork! Gord and John, thanks for your thoughts on this! Jack-hopefully floating this summer- In Mass.

Hi Jack,
It looks like you are doing a great job on your Amphicar, and I have to do a similar repair on my quarter panels, although hopefully not as extensive. I am also in Massachusetts. Could you tell me where you live, and whether I might come by to see your efforts and your approach to this problem. You can call me at (617) 721-9400 or email me at chasgould@mac.com
Thanks,
Chas
