Water trans drive gear retainer clips:

Ina in NJ had a retainer clip come off one of her propshaft drive gears this past August - she had her guy in PA repair it and shes great again -
Is it advisable to use some kind of wire between the holes in the ends of these to help prevent them from dislodging from gear motion when shifting back & forth? If so, what kind of wire is used?

Good idea! - But can an extra measure of security be achieved by holding the clip ends together with twisted wire?

I second Gord's mandate for using new retaining clips on those intermediate gear top hats. I reused a clip once and it came off again. It looked perfect but evidently had lost some of its tension. Given the damage and mess caused by these coming off, a new clip from Gordon's is a no brainer.

I 3rd the suggestion!

But wouldnt a twist of bronze wire make them impossible to acvidentally come apart ?

If the clip and slot are in good order, you won't want or need safety wire as it will do it's job as designed. That is just another part to wear and be loose in the trans. Do not do it.

A new clip from GORDON Souter.. ( or you can get them at local hardware stores)

I'm sure the original clip was made to metric standards and you want to be sure it fits down into the groove of the top hat. I generally don't expect much at a local hardware store to be done to metric measurements. Remember the clip problems with the cross point universals and how they were not metric and had trouble fitting right. I can't speak for Gord Souter's. They may be fine since Canada has more metric stuff but I'm sure about Gordon Imports.
