Water tranny help needed

I have been working on our water tranny. All the gears, bearing and
bushings are in place. I am having a problem that I have had twice
already while putting the cover and shifting linkage back together.
The problem is: When the front cover is back on, I am unable to
shift.
After many conversations with Dave, Wayne and a well known
transmission builder, I am told the shift fingers coming from inside
the land tranny all need to be in the neutral position. I have found
this position but am having a time trying to hold the selector fork
with large boss inside the grove behind the fingers while mounting
the front cover.
Can anybody please help me find a way to get this job done in time to
make it to the Lake Geneva swim-in this weekend.
We really want to take Amphi for this cool and colorful last of the
season swim-in.
Thanks,

Is the problem with shifting the water tranny only?

The shifting problem is in the land tranny only, I can get the water
tranny in and out of gear fine. Dave the Wave said to pull the
bottom finger out a notch so that the boss on the selector finger has
something to lay on. I'm going to go try that now.
