Hi Steve,

I've been intrigued by the possibility of a wankel engine in an
Amphicar for a couple of years now. The high RPM capability of those
engines would work well with the Amphi's low gear ratio. I suspect one
would be advised to limit the wankel to a smaller one from an earlier
car than the RX7. The large horsepower of the later engines would
probably trash the transmission and drive shafts. The engine itself
is quite small but I haven't looked into how the other items, like the
manifolds and carb would fit in.

Its an interesting possibility. I drive an RX-8 and a 1st gen RX-7
before that, so I know a little about rotaries. The 12A from the early
cars would probably work, although the 13B doesn't produce
dramatically more power (135 HP NA) and is probably far easier to
source repair parts for. Also, the tuner market means there are tons
of aftermarket parts for the things, so engine computers for EFI are
readily obtainable (if pricey).

The biggest concern (after the transmission) would be heat, I imagine.
The engines notoriously run quite hot, and without some fairly serious
fans and insulation, your rear seats will probably double as a pizza
oven. OTOH, I might just be speaking from my nether regions.

Re: Re: Wankel Engine

Hi Gang:

I am a member of the NSU Club as well and have three rotary engined cars 2
single rotor Spider and a 2 rotor Ro80. I agree with Peter that the Mazda
13 B would be the best engine to use. It is cheap to get and parts are
easily available. It is also cheap and easy to overhaul. The 12A is getting
harder to come by. Both engines are small enough to fit inside with an
adapter plate. The engines produce heat but I never had a problem with
that but given that the Amphi radiator is in the back I would suggest a
newer type radiator with double rows and of course it would have an
efficient electric fan and an external oil cooler. This would mean of
course using an alternator and switching the polarity on the gas gauge but
that is an easy fix as shown on the club's tech tips. Running the exhaust
would require some thought

The only thought I really have is how that would affect the value as it
would no longer be original. The project seems quite feasible.
